Middle school students capture Zoo Miami’s wildlife in photos

Ron Magill, Nikon Ambassador and Zoo Miami’s director of communications, allowed students up-close access to animals during a special event on Oct. 18 at Zoo Miami, hosted in celebration of Mercantil Commercebank’s Zoolens Photography Project.

Mercantil Commercebank, along with Nikon, recently hosted a special event for middle school students at Zoo Miami as part of the 2014 edition of its Zoolens Photography Project.

On Oct. 18, scores of Miami- Dade County middle school students explored Zoo Miami with Ron Magill, Nikon Ambassador and Zoo Miami’s director of communications. Granted exclusive access, the students were able to snap creative photos of animals while collecting professional photography tips from Magill.

Nikon representatives offered the students digital Nikon photography equipment to borrow and memory cards to keep, and representatives from Pitman Photo Supply presented gift certificates for photo printing. The educational and exciting day was in celebration of the month-long contest for Miami-Dade County middle school students, which Mercantil Commercebank developed in partnership with Zoo Miami and the Zoological Society of Florida.

The 2014 project ran through Oct. 31 and students interested in participating submitted an original, artistic photograph of a Zoo Miami animal before Nov. 1. A panel of judges was to choose three grand prize winners and 10 honorable mentions. The first place winner will receive a $2,000 savings account, second place will receive a $1,500 savings account, and third place, a $1,000 savings account. The top three finishers also will receive a professional camera and their respective schools will receive a donation courtesy of Mercantil Commercebank. The 10 honorable mentions will receive a $100 Visa Gift Card.

More information about the contest is available online at www.Zoolens.com.
