Miami-Dade Commissioner Lynda Bell hands a bag of food to one of more than 1,000 residents who benefited from the commissioner’s food giveaway.

Miami-Dade Commissioner Lynda Bell hosted her first annual Thanksgiving Food Giveaway at South Dade Park on Saturday, Nov. 12, to a steady stream of eager families from South Dade, totaling over 1,000 residents in just three hours.

Residents received one large frozen turkey or chicken, along with traditional holiday staples appropriate for a Thanksgiving Day dinner compliments of Farm Share, Publix Supermarkets and the Park Foundation of Miami-Dade.

“One of the great pleasures of being a public servant is having the ability to bring people together for a common cause,” Commissioner Bell said. “I am truly overwhelmed by the tremendous response from our community, as well as the countless smiles that this giveaway brought to residents, young and old, as they picked up their bags filled with a traditional Thanksgiving Day meal.

“In addition, as a result of the selflessness of the over 100 local volunteers who participated in this event, over 1,000 families will be able to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving Day meal with all the trimmings,” Commissioner Bell added.

Commissioner Bell and her staff were aided in the food distribution by more than 100 volunteers from Commission District 8 churches, schools and local residents.
