Earth Day (Apr. 22) at Dr. Edward L. Whigham Elementary PLC in Cutler Bay definitely was a green event for the staff and students as well as some parents. Activities were designed to get the youngsters thinking at an early age about taking care of the environment.

“We had the entire Primary Learning Center students participate, which is roughly 150 students,” said Lissette Clark, kindergarten teacher. “The children walked around the school cleaning up litter and recycling what we could.

“Parents donated all types of plants and mulch to beautify the front of our school. We also had three parent volunteers come in and help us digging the holes in order for the children to plant the flowers or trees they brought in.”

Parent volunteers participating on campus were Geoffrey McFarlane, Luz Soto and Daniel Egerton.

Also helping were 12 teachers and school principal Susan J. Lyle.

Whigham Elementary is located at 21545 SW 87 Ave. and has grades pre-K through 5.
