The Town of Cutler Bay conducted its second annual “Wings Over the Bay” chicken wing competition on Saturday, Mar. 11, at Cutler Ridge Park with more than 1,000 residents and neighbors attending the event

Beside the tasting of chicken wings prepared by professional and amateur chefs, event entertainment was provided for all ages, including a bounce house and maze challenge for kids, line dancing with the Belles and Outlaws, the musical stylings of Ricky Valido, and a chicken wing eating contest sponsored by Buffalo Wild Wings.

Eight teams competed for the best chicken wings, ranging from local restaurants, small businesses and individual residents. In addition to bragging rights, cash prizes and trophies in the following four flavor categories were awarded: Buffalo, Garlic Parmesan, Special Grilled and People’s Choice for Best Buffalo Wings.

“I am very proud of our Parks & Recreation Department, especially our Special Events Team, who went above and beyond to revamp all of our events and make them even better than previous years,” said Rafael Casals, town manager. “Thousands of residents and neighbors from all over the county came together to enjoy this small town event. With so many local restaurants competing for the different category titles, it was hard to choose which chicken wings were the best; the competition was tough and tasty. The event setting was fun and exciting, but also casual and laid back as well, which provided the perfect atmosphere for residents to share some memorable moments with town staff and our council members.”

Those in attendance were invited to sample wings from all the teams and asked to text in their People’s Choice votes. Behind the scenes, a panel of judges were provided private tastings for each team to vote for the Best Buffalo, Garlic Parmesan, and Special Grilled wing flavor samples. Each category was judged on the following criteria: Appearance, Tenderness, Flavor, and Overall Impression.

The competition’s winners were:
● Best Buffalo Wing: Pub Grill;
● Best Parmesan Garlic Wing: Quincy’s Quest aka Rodbenders;
● Best Special Grill Wing: Flava Unit, and
● People;s Choice for Best Buffalo Wing: 3 Jerks.

A total of four contestants entered the chicken wing eating competition, with Philip Bonsignore taking the crown as the “King Wing Eater” after devouring 14 chicken wings sponsored by Buffalo Wild Wings.

This year’s events sponsors were Florida City Gas, TD Bank, and Buffalo Wild Wings. Vendors in attendance included Cantina Mexican Grill, Main Stop Grill Food Trucks, Rodbenders, Pub Grill, Pig Floyd, Mrs. Bryant’s Cookies, Miami Events Group, Snow Caps Snow Cones, Integrity Martial Arts, and the Miami-Dade Animal Services Department.
