Founded by Nick Silverio, A Safe Haven for Newborns has saved from abandonment more than 260 infants – and counting. Next up for this amazing group of volunteers is an annual gala being held October 21, at 7 p.m., at the InterContinental Miami at 100 Chopin Plaza. Save the date. For more information on sponsorship or tickets, visit www.asafehavenfornewborns.org.

South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce held its Diversity Health Fair at MACC bringing in bus loads of guests for free health screening and an expo. A ticketed luncheon was also coordinated that featured a panel of doctors that presented their specialties and then answered questions for a very informative program orchestrated by Lilliam Lopez. Many DBC members and community leaders were on hand including Vilma Medio, Diana Dwyer, Patty Vila, Katharine Cue-Fuente, and Claudia Miro, to mention a few.

On May 5, Palmetto General Hospital held a stroke reunion event. One of the survivors is former NFL Player Brett Perriman whose son, Breshad, also currently plays in the NFL. Since May was stroke month, Palmetto General wanted people to be able to recognize the signs of stroke. This hospital has one of the best numbers in the country when it comes to helping patients who have had a stroke and Dr. Kaushal, one of the luncheon panelists, is the only doctor that actually has a police light in his car to make it to the hospital in the quickest possible time.

On the foundation front, the Marc Jaiden Foundation held its gala at the InterContinental Hotel. It was a huge success with proceeds from the affair to benefit the great work this non-profit does in helping those in need with vision screenings, eyeglasses and surgeries.

Mission trips to areas of need in Haiti and Jamaica as well as local screenings are among the outreach efforts of this amazing organization. Congratulations to Marc and Melissa Barbier on wonderful evening. These two were also seen with their Foundation Vice President Andre Boykin at the launch another organization, The Beauty of Sight Foundation, which could very well complement their own mission.

The Beauty of Sight Foundation’s launch was held June 1 at Morrison Brown Argiz & Farra, LLC (MBAF CPA and Advisors) in their 18th floor office lobby on Brickell. This new foundation with a mission of creating a world without blindness came together through the efforts of Florida Lions Eye Bank, the oldest eye bank in the State of Florida.

Among the other sponsors involved thus far are The Lubbitz Financial Group, Wells Fargo and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Among the crowd at this launch were the Foundation’s Juan Tejera; Lawrence Schiff, of MBAF; Lions Eye Bank Executive Director, Elizabeth Fout-Caraza, who will also be taking on an additional role with this new Foundation; Dr. Sander Dubovy, Florida Lions Eye Bank Medical Director; Andre Doren, principal with AVD Marketing – and dozens of supporters.

Finally, the Jr. Orange Bowl Committee’s Parade Unveiling for this year’s event will be held at the Pullman Miami Airport, 5800 Blue Lagoon, on June 15, 6 – 8 p.m. This year’s parade will be held Thanksgiving weekend, November 26. To attend the unveiling, RSVP the JOBC office at 305 662-1210. JOBC Members are gratis/ guest and prospective members pay $20. Self parking is $5.
