From the moment it opened its doors, Divine Savior Academy has been geared toward excellence every step of the way. With the blessing of the school’s expansion, there is no doubt that DSA’s high school students will find new, exciting opportunities in years to come. One example is the expansion of the school’s journalism program.

“Journalism is one of those unique areas that brings together so many different components under one big umbrella. Many skills are developed by student journalists: leadership, communication, writing, marketing, and visual aspects like photography, video production, and graphic design,” says Michael Babler, Student Media Adviser at Divine Savior Academy.

Providing students with lifelong skills, the program also seeks to prepare them for future professions and careers.

“Being part of The Golden Legacy staff has taught me to work under pressure and meet deadlines…while still creating a quality product.

These skills that I have learned in student journalism will benefit me for the rest of my life as I aspire to teach writing one day,” states junior Elena Mueller, Design Editor of The Golden Legacy.

Currently, DSA has a student-run media group known as Network58. Consisting of print, broadcast, and convergence journalism, the program has undergone some compelling transformations.

“In just three years we’ve grown from a single news magazine to an online news presence [network58online.com], a monthly video update [Shark News Network], and an improved news magazine [The Golden Legacy] with expanded campus coverage. This year, students have shown tremendous drive and dedication to making each of these publications the best they can be,”comments Babler.

DSA is hoping to see exponential growth in programs such as this with the opening of its new high school building in the summer of 2015.

“With our expanding journalism program at Divine Savior, we are excited for what our high school building will bring. Our new video production studio will be the center of activity for our new video production classes and will also allow our video broadcast team to learn and practice new skills in a real studio setting,” adds Babler.
