Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons bring opportunities for giving and sharing like few other holidays. During this time, Miami Christian School is most grateful for its corporate and individual donors who help the school provide students with a dedicated faculty and state of the art technology as well as scholarships to those in need.

Most recently, through the association of MCS with the Doral Business Council and the generosity of DBC member ‘CC’ Gatewood and Sam’s Club, the school received a sizable donation of juices and snacks to be used in various programs and activities, helping to fulfill some funding needs.

Thanksgiving at MCS is always a time for fun and good food, especially for elementary students. Each year, they perform hilarious skits for friends and family before that holiday’s break. Then, as always, students and guests retreat to the lunchroom and patio area for a delicious feast with many parents contributing favorite Thanksgiving Day dishes.

Of course, the holidays remind MCS students of how important this time is to reach out to others. Taking center stage during the Christmas season is a collection for Suni Home Orphanage in India with whom students maintain a year-to-year relationship. Before Sunil’s Home’s “Mama” Lynn Bauer returns for her next visit there (in early January), students have been collecting new underwear garments as well as seeds for the home’s organic garden, something they started after learning about MCS student garden.

In other news, MCS recently hosted legislators from Tennessee, Indiana and Oklahoma who were on a fact-finding trip to Florida, sponsored by the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice to research school choice and the effect on private schools. While staying at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, the group met with the Florida State Commissioner of Education, Gerard Robinson, former Governor Jeb Bush and various Florida legislators. Electing to visit Miami Christian School for a tour, the group also met with Woody Gentry, Dr.Teri Logan and Dr. Lorena Morrison.

The MCS Library and the National Honor Society hosted “Read Under The Stars” for students on the campus. Younger students enjoyed snacks and beverages while listening to honors students read books aloud during evening hours. Parents also participated with their students.

On the cultural front, National Hispanic Heritage Day was celebrated in great style at MCS. Mariachis led an on campus parade of students who dressed in the costumes of their national origin. Presentations and a feast of foods from various countries rounded out the festivities.

In addition, Freedom Day was observed on campus with a parade and rally. A human American Flag comprised of elementary and middle school students highlighted that event with band and choral performances creating an added sense of patriotism.

Miami Christian School will hold an open house Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012, 4-6 p.m. For more information, tel. 305-221- 7754 or visit www.MiamiChristian.org.
