The Village of Palmetto Bay hosted a Gold Star Family Memorial ceremony at the future site of a Veterans Park on Saturday, Oct. 15, for a groundbreaking event for a special monument to be built at the park.

Attending the event, which included a “parade” from American Legion Marlin Moore Post 133, located at 16401 SW 90 Ave., to the future park site at 16165 S. Dixie Hwy., behind South Motors, were members of the village council, members of Post 133, guests from American Legion District 14 Command and others.

One special guest was Hershel Woodrow (”Woody”) Williams, last surviving Medal of Honor recipient from Iwo Jima, who was the honored guest speaker. Williams was presented with the Key to Miami-Dade County by Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava. The Key to the County is a special honor reserved for distinguished individuals who live outside Miami-Dade who have contributed something significant to the community.
