Miami Book Fair fosters literacy, learning for children and teens

Whether you are the parent of a child looking for their next favorite book or a teenager obsessed with the latest fantasy series, Miami Dade College’s acclaimed Miami Book Fair (MBF), the nation’s finest and largest literary gathering, has something to offer.

Generation Genius gathers the fair’s literacy and learning programs for children and teens and brings them all under one banner. All year long, MBF’s Generation Genius programs such as Read to Learn Books for Free distribute thousands of children’s books around Miami-Dade County.

MBF continues its promise to engage thousands of young minds through the celebrated Children’s Alley with author presentations, live music, performances, and much more.

Children of all ages can enjoy:
• Generation Genius School Field Trips will bring nearly 10,000 school kids from all over Miami-Dade County to the Fair to meet their favorite authors!

• Tweens and Teens will find a lineup of authors of fantasy, adventure and thriller books, as well as graphic novels including Gene Luen Yang (Secret Coders: Paths & Portals), William Ritter (Ghostly Echoes: A Jackaby Novel), Sara Shepard (The Amateurs), Victoria Aveyard (Glass Sword), Leigh Bardugo (Crooked Kingdom: A Sequel to Six of Crows), George O’Connor (Apollo: The Brilliant One), Dave Barry (Worst Night Ever), Lois Lowry (Looking Back: A Book of Memories), Jon Scieszka (Frank Einstein and the EvoBlaster), Ridley Pearson (The Initiation (Lock and Key)), Margaret Stohl (Black Widow, Red Vengeance) and many more.

• Mr. Wembly Wordsmith returns to his Author Tent in Children’s Alley to present non-stop author readings and hands-on activities with some of the best writers in children’s literature, including Adam Lehrhaupt (I Will Not Eat You), Jeffrey Brown (Lucy and Andy Neanderthal), Cressida Cowell (How to Train Your Dragon: How to Fight a Dragon’s Fury), Sarah Mlynowski (Whatever After 10: Sugar and Spice), Frank Viva (Sea Change), Drew Weing (The Creepy Case Files of Margot Maloo), Faith Erin Hicks (The Nameless City), Melissa de la Cruz (Return to the Isle of the Lost), James Riley (Story Thieves: The Stolen Chapters), Robert Venditti (The Rise of the Robot Army), Lauren Wolk (Wolf Hollow), Amy Ignatow (The Mighty Odds) and more.

• Catch some of your favorite picture book authors such as Matthew Reinhart (Frozen: A Pop-up Adventure), Todd Parr (Be Who You Are!), Juana Medina (Juana & Lucas) and Eric Litwin (Groovy Joe: Ice Cream and Dinosaurs), along with music, storytellers, and much more, at the Once Upon a Time Stage in Children’s Alley.

At Children’s Alley, imagination takes center stage with six Pop-Up Fun Rooms: Tot Time Play and Learn, Science Fair, The Rhythm Factory, Healthy Bodies, Happy Kids, The Paintbox, and One World Many Stories will teach children how to make and illustrate books, experiment with science, sing-a-long, dance, play instruments, make healthy choices, travel through space, and explore diverse cultures.

For over three decades the fair has been committed to fostering a love of reading in children. Children’s Alley will open on Friday, Nov. 18, at 9 a.m. and will continue through Sunday, Nov. 20.
