New Residency Programs Open at Kendall Regional Medical Center

Kendall Regional Medical CenterKendall Regional Medical Center is proud to announce the start of General Surgery and Internal Medicine residency programs beginning July 1st. “This is a very exciting time for Kendall Regional Medical Center and the community-at-large as we move into this new area of training residents. Both programs selected an outstanding group of residents who are eager to start providing high quality care to our patients,” said Bill Boyer, D.H.S.C., M.S., Director of Graduate Medical Education. There is a lot of excitement throughout the hospital to have the residents working in the patient care areas as an integrated team with all the care providers.

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has a rigorous process for accreditation of programs, in addition to stringent regulations regarding oversight. Kendall Regional Medical Center met all of the necessary requirements that ensure the medical residents receive the highest level of education and training. The residency programs and faculty will continue to foster and build an academic medicine environment that will offer the most innovative and progressive clinical care available.

The General Surgery residency program led by Mark McKenney, M.D., F.A.C.S., will begin training 16 residents on their journey to becoming surgeons. Kendall Regional Medical Center is well-equipped and resourced to provide high quality training to the residents with our Level II Trauma Center, Burn Center, and variety of general, orthopedic and other subspecialty surgical specialties. “This is the first new allopathic (MD) surgery training program in Miami Dade County in over 60 years. Kendall Regional Medical Center is proud to be recognized as having the surgeons and resources to train the next generation of surgeons”, said Dr. McKenney.

The Internal Medicine residency is starting with 10 residents for their first year of training. Himangi Kaushal, M.D., F.A.C.P., Program Director for the program stated, “We are excited to have the opportunity to train these young physicians to provide comprehensive and compassionate care to our patients and become leaders in the field of medicine. Our goal is to uphold and further strengthen the motto of KRMC- ‘Quality care – Done right’”. The Internal Medicine program is also well positioned to provide an excellent educational environment for the residents with multiple subspecialty areas that will provide the student with a full breadth of exposure to the field of medicine.
