The Pirates of Penzance performances set for July

Enjoy a summer romp for the whole family with Gilbert & Sullivan’s light-hearted opera The Pirates of Penzance, sung by members of Miami Acting Company and Riuniti Opera, with conductor Timothy Shade and the Alhambra Orchestra. Cast members are Sophia Aranda, Jonathan Mitzenmacher, Francine Birns, Christopher Dreeson, and Lito Becerra.

A just for kids performance of one hour takes place on Thursday, July 14, 10 a.m. at Ponce de Leon Middle School auditorium, 5801 Augusto St. in Coral Gables. All are children welcome and adults can come, too.

A performance for all ages is set for Sunday, July 17, 4 p.m., at Temple Beth Am auditorium, 5950 N. Kendall Dr. in Pinecrest.

When the pirates and their apprentice Frederic meet the Major General and his daughters, musical hilarity ensues. This operetta, premiered in in 1879, recently had a long run on Broadway and is still an audience favorite. It’s a great way to introduce your children to opera, and beat the summer doldrums yourself.

All three presenting organizations are local nonprofits dedicated to serving our community. Sunday venue generously donated by Temple Beth Am. Free admission and parking.
