Rotary presents $900 check to Pinecrest Elementary for sneaker collection

The Rotary Club of Miami Dadeland-Pinecrest partnered with Got Sneakers LLC, a local recycling company to organize a Sneaker Collection Program with Pinecrest Elementary to raise funds for school projects.

The program gained support from Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner. Mayor Lerner thought it was a perfect match for students to raise money while learning about environmental concerns. The schools administration, teachers, parents and students worked together to collect 900 pairs of old and worn sneakers which earned them $900.

Howard Horowitz, the president of the Rotary Club of Miami Dadeland-Pinecrest presented the check to Principal Lynn Zaldua during the school’s Earth Day ceremony. Principal Zaldua said the students should be proud of what they did and explained the importance of protecting the environment. This project would not have been as successful as it was without the guidance and organization provided by both Lisa Gomez, the schools communications/media director and Teresa Vega, the schools guidance counselor.

Attending the Earth Day ceremony program was Donna Genet, past president of the Rotary Club of Miami Dadeland-Pinecrest, David Kinney president Elect and Howard Horowitz, current president. Steven Salstein and Eric Mesa, the managing owners of the Got Sneakers LLC were also there to congratulate the students.

Other schools and civic organizations have initiated sneaker collections with the Rotary Club and Got Sneakers LLC.
