The South Florida Youth Symphony has been invited to the Presidential Inaugural in January 2017.

The South Florida Youth Symphony (SFYS), one of the nation’s premier youth music organizations, is heading to Washington, DC, for the inauguration of a new president in January 2017.

With the public’s help, that is.

The Youth Symphony, which has performed nationally — including two times at Carnegie Hall in New York — and internationally, has been invited to perform at the prestigious Heritage Music Festival in Washington, DC. As part of that festival, members of the symphony will have seats for the presidential inauguration.

“This is an great opportunity to not only play at one of the nation’s most prestigious music festivals but to attend a presidential inauguration, a once-in-a-lifetime experience for these kids,” said Marjorie Hahn, the Youth Symphony’s musical and executive director.

“But to make this trip we’ll need the help of the entire South Florida community.”

The SFYS, comprised of musicians from throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties, has opened a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to cover the cost of the trip, estimated at $40,000.

“We’ve started to receive donations from throughout the country,” Hahn said. “Many of our former students are chipping in. They know that quite a few of our students can’t even afford the cost of joining the Youth Symphony, but that we have never turned away a child because of their family’s inability to pay.”
