A colorful combination of “Wings and Wheels” again is expected to draw hundreds of car and aviation buffs to Miami Executive Airport on Saturday, May 28.

Open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the annual Memorial Day Weekend Car Show on the tarmac at Wings Over Miami Air Museum is planned by a group of volunteers to help raise funds for the museum’ operating budget.

Classic car collectors from throughout South Florida will display both vintage models and special edition sports cars alongside aviation exhibits. Car owners and museum pilots readily share their knowledge with visitors about rare vehicles and aircraft.

“The event is an opportunity for people from all the car clubs in South Florida to join together to support a very unusual museum,” said Oscar Castro, lead organizer.

“While we promote other charity events, this is one that we look forward to each year, adding activities such as live music and continuing to improve the show.”

The event is held rain or shine for automobile exhibitors while museum pilots will fly if good weather prevails.

“The aircraft flights both educate and share with the public the special sound of a radical motor in flight,” said Suze Rice, Wings Over Miami president, noting flights are planned to begin at 11 a.m. Among the unusual aircraft scheduled to fly: a 1943 AT6D/T-34, a Chinese CJ and a Russian Yak-52, all vintage military trainers whose pilots meet and chat with visitors between flights.

“While the car show is limited to one day, it has a great impact on the museum’s programs,” Rice said. “It is certainly generous of the car show sponsors, the event planners and car owners to spend time and money helping the museum stay viable.

“I can’t imagine a better mix of interests for the museum’s unique airplanes along with a spectacular display of car classics and many hand-crafted restorations.”

Automobile owners who want to participate may still register cars at a discount until May 27 by visiting www.benefitcarshows.com.

Entrance for the general public is $10 (13 years and older; children 5-12 years, $5). Veterans and active duty military are admitted free.

Wings over Miami Museum, 14710 SW 128 St., is open Wednesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday noon-5 p.m. It can be reached from SW 137th Avenue using the !28th Street entrance to Miami Executive Airport. For information, call 305-233-5197.
