What better way to celebrate poetry than with a Poetry Is Dead Parade.

The O, Miami Poetry Festival has returned for the third time this April for a new round of events and projects that attempt to deliver a poem to all 2.6 million- plus residents of Miami-Dade County.

Both a celebration of contemporary poetry and an experimental project to turn a metropolitan area into a canvas for the literary arts, O, Miami weaves poetry into existing infrastructures and combines it with other forms in order to democratize participation in the arts.

“We’re thrilled to once again surprise Miamians,” said executive director P. Scott Cunningham.

Miami is experiencing poetry in many different ways — via readings, pin ups at ArtCenter/South Florida (Apr. 22), workshops, a funeral procession in Little Argentina for Juan Gelman, José Martí on a white horse in Little Havana (Apr. 22), at Miami’s first Lit Crawl (Apr. 26) and at O, Miami’s clubhouse in Edgewater; from an FM transmitter, via Twitter, on the windows of an office building, in the mail, on the radio; at Gramp’s Bar in Wynwood, on the stoops of the Betsy Hotel on Miami Beach; from one end of the county to another, from one city to another.

“Peotry is a living, breathing force that can light up the city. O, Miami is its platform. The written word leaves the printed page for a parade on South Beach, morphs into interpretive dance in Hialeah, and along the way helps art become part of people’s everyday lives,” said Alberto Ibargüen, president of Knight Foundation.

Through Apr. 30, the O, Miami Poetry Festival will take many forms, popping up in the most unexpected of places!

And it’s all free.
