Voters who live in County Commission District 11 (West Kendall and West Dade), have an opportunity to vote JUAN ZAPATA on August 14, election day. After representing the residents of Kendall for eight years or four consecutive terms, State Representative Juan Zapata left the Florida Legislature and is seeking to serve his community on the Board of County Commissioners in the vacant seat in District 11.
Juan C. Zapata earned a reputation for his commitment to his community, resulting in his election to the West Kendall Community Council in 1996 and later to the Florida House of Representatives in 2002.
During his eight years as a state legislator, Zapata sponsored many pieces of noteworthy legislation to protect the interests of children and the elderly, expand health care options for the uninsured and promote Florida’s economy. Zapata developed an expertise in health care policy and budgetary matters while serving in leadership roles on health and human services committees. His acquired knowledge led him to sponsor bills to improve child nutrition in schools, increase access to health care and reduce burdensome homeowner taxes and fees. In 2008, Zapata was elected Chairman of the Miami-Dade Legislative Delegation. During his unprecedented three-year tenure as Chairman of the delegation, Zapata ushered in a new era of cooperation between Miami-Dade County’s State Senators and Representatives and its local County and City officials on behalf of moving forward vital infrastructure projects such as the Miami port tunnel, the Palmetto and Dolphin Expressway expansion and interchange projects, and the NW 25th Street Viaduct. Juan Zapata, a product of our local public educational system having graduated from W. R. Thomas Middle School, Sunset Senior High School, Miami-Dade Community College, and Florida International University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and International Business, defended South Florida’s public education system in Tallahassee, proving a committed leader can produce results.
Following his passion for education and understanding that reading is the basis for learning, Zapata also founded Read 2 Succeed, which filled a void in the West Miami-Dade community for free tutoring services and provided children with books and supplies. Juan Zapata understands the complexities of serving in a county commission district that falls entirely in the Unincorporated Areas of Miami-Dade County and borders some of the most environmentally sensitive wetlands in the State, as well as some of the last remaining parcels of agricultural lands in West Kendall. He clearly understands all the critical issues facing our community including reducing traffic congestion; improving student to teacher ratios in our public schools; protecting the Urban Development Boundary; and revitalizing our economy and major employment industries to reduce unemployment in our community.
