Rabbi Jonathan Tabachnikoff (left), Cantor Don Bennett (center), and guest musician Harvey Kaufman participate in a unique, uplifting Beatles Shabbat — appropriately dressed — at Congregation Dor Chadash. The synagogue, with more than 200 members, has gained a reputation for its occasional “themed” Shabbat services.

Two recent “unique” Shabbat services — A Beatles Shabbat and a special Children’s Shabbat — have proven to be highly successful for Congregation Dor Chadash, 9400 SW 87 Ave. in Kendall.

Led by Rabbi Jonathan Tabachnikoff, Dor Chadash — A New Generation — has begun to make a name for itself in the Kendall/South Dade area.

“These were fun, yet meaningful Shabbat services,” said Tabachnikoff, 47. “Having an occasional ‘themed’ Shabbat makes the services even more enjoyable for the congregation.”

More than 200 congregants — including many first time visitors — filled the Rabbi Barry Tachnikoff Sanctuary for the recent Beatles Shabbat featuring Cantor Don Bennett and special guest musician Harvey Kaufman. The ceremony featured musical influences of the Beatles as well as words of the liturgy set to Beatles melodies.

The next week, a special Children’s PJ Shabbat, with youngsters ranging from just a few months old to 10 years, preceded the regular weekly services. At the service Rabbi Tabachnikoff read a special book to the children, parents and grandparents while explaining the meaning and traditions of Shabbat. Following the reading, the rabbi’s wife, Lori, lead the families in the making of unique, personalized challah covers.

“This was a great way to get the entire family involved in Shabbat,” said Lori Tabachnikoff, herself a new mother. “Showing the kids that Shabbat — and temple, in general — can also be fun and educational is important as they begin their lives in Judaism.”
