Huntington Learning Center: Legacy of tutoring excellence

The Huntington Learning Center opened in 1986 and has been providing students the path to educational success through two generations of children in the same location at 11050 N. Kendall Dr.

Their mission stems from one criterion: “What is best for the student guides all decisions.”

“Our school was just re-accredited for another six years by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. All of our teachers have degrees and the majority of them are Dade County public school teachers,” said Robert Santana, Huntington Learning Center in Kendall.

The center’s approach to tutoring is one that considers the academic needs of the student, first determined by an intensive academic evaluation. This evaluation leads to the ability to provide a unique program that focuses highly individualized attention on each student. With low student-toteacher ratios, most programs are on a oneto- one basis, while others never exceed four-to-one.

The center provides assistance with academic skills and tutoring in all subjects, and examination preparation. Huntington can help students score higher on important college entrance exams such as SAT, ACT and PSAT, as well as high school entrance exams and the GED, among others.

The level of individualized attention to each student includes not only an intensive academic evaluation, but the ability to establish a flexible schedule that works best with each student’s potential time constraints.

“We also work with the parents’ permission to visit their child’s regular school to talk to the teacher. We will partner with this teacher to work together for the benefit of the student. This is a free service to our enrolled students,” Santana said.

According to Santana, the need for parents to be full partners in their child’s educational program is essential. Huntington keeps parents informed of their child’s progress via regular meetings with teachers. They are encouraged to work with the child to reach the goals necessary for the child’s educational success

The Huntington Learning Center in Kendall fully supports the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. It is participating with other partners in the educational community at the county and state levels to assist children in need.

According to the enabling legislation, the purpose of the NCLB is, “to ensure that all children have a fair, equal and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards and state academic assessments.”

Huntington Learning Center opened in 1977. Educators, Dr. Raymond and Eileen Huntington were inspired by their interest in teaching and working with students to establish an approach to tutoring students that continues to be successful to this day. The founders developed and refined the curricula and instructional methodologies that allowed them to serve a wide variety of students and to provide them with a highly individualized tutoring program. In 1985, they initiated the opportunity for others to join the Huntington System as franchisees. Today, there are hundreds of locations nationwide.
