Lifesaving actions earn recognition for officerMiami-Dade Police Officer William Hilson (second from left) used an inner pants belt to place a tourniquet on the thigh of the severed left leg of an off-duty Customs and Border Protection Officer after a Feb. 13 motorcycling accident on Card Sound Road. “The quick actions of Officer Hilson were instrumental in saving the victim’s life,” according to the “Officer of the Month” citation, presented Feb. 25 by Hammocks Citizens Advisory Committee chair James Blough (left) along with Capt. Miguel Hernandez and Sgt. Richard Zhalka (right of Hilson). Immediate action by Officer Hilson who serves in the South Regional Agricultural Patrol Section of the Miam-Dade Police Hammocks District staunched blood flow before an emergency rescue team arrived to continue lifesaving measures and airlift the injured officer to Kendall Regional Medical Center.
