ChamberSouth members and guests enjoyed an “Escape to the Tropics” during the 86th annual Chairman’s Reception on Sept. 30.

The tropical-themed gala at the Sonesta Bayfront Hotel in Coconut Grove honored outgoing chair Claudia A. Cancio and incoming chair Joseph R. Gallaher who will lead the organization through fall 2017.

“I am humbled and honored to serve as your new chairman of ChamberSouth,” said Joe Gallaher, an associate with NAI Miami and longtime ChamberSouth member. “I only hope I can serve the South Dade community and businesses with the same energy, enthusiasm, and professionalism exhibited by our outgoing chair, Claudia A. Cancio.”

Each year, the Chairman’s Reception is a virtual “Who’s Who” of business leaders, public officials, and other South-Dade luminaries, including Florida State Senator Dwight Bullard who served as the 2016 Master of Ceremonies. The sold-out event also featured a silent auction, cocktails, and dancing – and played host to the organization’s Annual Awards Ceremony honoring three ChamberSouth members and community leaders.

Recognized for their exemplary leadership and commitment to the south Miami-Dade community were: Miami-Dade County District 8 Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava, who received the Annual Steven J. Cranman Professional Public Service Award; Zoo Miami communications director Ron Magil,l who “escaped” with the L. Russell Norton Service Award, and emerging young professional Mariano Martinez, vice president of US Century Bank, who received the Rising Star Award.

The newly appointed members of ChamberSouth’s 2016-17 Board of Directors introduced at the gala are: Councilmember Karyn Cunningham of Palmetto Bay; Stephen Foster, Foster Financial Services; Allison Polk, National Planning Corporation; Dailen Rodriguez, Dadeland Mall, and Alex Schreer, Grass River Properties, Shops at Sunset Place.
