St. Brendan varsity cheerleaders repeat as best in Dade County

The varsity cheerleaders from St. Brendan High School competed at the FHSAA Region 4 Competition in the Extra Large Varsity Division on Jan. 25 and walked away as champions for the third consecutive year.

The team then went on to compete at the FHSAA State Championships on Jan. 31 and came in runnerup in the Extra Large Varsity 1A Division for the second year in a row.

For the first time the Varsity Cheerleaders qualified for the National High School Cheerleading Championships at the Wide World of Sports in Walt Disney World on Feb. 8. They went head to head against 29 other teams from 16 states in the Super Varsity Division II finishing in 10th place. St. Brendan High School was the only school from South Florida competing in the Super Large Varsity Division.

There are 27 young women on the varsity squad and 14 of them are seniors. Most of these ladies have been cheering since they were 7 years old and all take private lessons for tumbling. The school season began with the UCA overnight Cheer Camp in August and ended in February. To keep in competitive cheering shape during the off-season some of the team members also cheer for all-star teams throughout Miami.
