Still time to register for Give Kids A Smile free dental day, Sat. Feb. 26

Main Street’s Children’s Dentistry offers free dental exams for children whose families cannot afford care or are uninsured, giving back to the community during National Children’s Dental Health Month, in conjunction with the American Dental Association’s volunteer initiative.

Give Kids A Smile will take place Saturday, February 26, 2011; from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Main Street Children’s Dentistry of Kendall; 7887 N. Kendall Drive, Suite 200, Kendall.

Due to the number of people expected, participants must be pre-registered prior to the event – by Fri., Feb. 25. To pre-register a child and receive an appointment time, call 888.643.0221.

Main Street’s volunteer team of pediatric dentists and assistants will be on hand to see up to 200 children for a routine dental visit – providing a complete exam, x-rays, cleaning, fluoride treatment and sealants to needy children, ideally from ages five to eight. The goal is to reach parents of children without insurance and those who can’t afford dental care for their children.

Nearly one in four children, age two to eleven, have untreated cavities in their baby teeth, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Many children receive no dental services throughout the year.

Give Kids A Smile is held annually to provide free dental services to local, qualifying children from low-income families; raise awareness of the epidemic of untreated dental disease occurring here and across the country; and raise awareness of the need to build local public and private partnerships to increase access to oral health care to solve this crisis.

Dental disease among kids from low-income families is epidemic: 80 percent of children’s tooth decay is found in just 25 percent of children.
