FFIU College of Architecture and The Arts Leadership Advisory Board

The FIU College of Architecture and The Arts has a new Dean’s Leadership Advisory Board, which met recently for the first time.

The 32-member board, consisting of prominent leaders in the performing arts, visual arts, design, finance, business, and communication, assists Brian Schriner, dean of the College of Architecture and The Arts, by supporting and representing the College’s interests in the community.

Centering on South Florida’s arts, design, and cultural transformation and the College’s resulting unique leadership opportunities, the Board discussed the implementation of their 2013-14 strategic initiatives: securing the necessary financial resources to ensure student access and timely completion to degree; finding gainful and meaningful internships and employment for the College’s students and graduates; increasing the College’s public-private partnerships, entrepreneurial opportunities, and study abroad programs; launching specialized and interdisciplinary academic initiatives at the College’s recently opened Miami Beach Urban Studios.

“This blue ribbon advisory board will assist the college by opening up new opportunities to innovate unique and productive programs and interfaces involving crossdisciplinary collaborations that will strengthen ties with the professions and enrich educational experiences for students,” said Bill Hipp, board chair and dean Emeritus at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music.

Board members discussed the importance of examining how universities educate students and the role of community and professional engagement in that process. In support, Schriner congratulated the College’s faculty for establishing a nationally renowned curriculum that is as creative, innovative, and inspiring as Miami itself.

“By sharing my exposure, contacts and my experience worldwide, my contributions to this board will help to expand the College’s international reputation,” said board member Kobi Karp, principal of Kobi Karp Architects.

Dean Schriner applauded the Board’s commitment, financial support, and enthusiasm. “It is evident by your overwhelming support, the College plays a central role in our community. Through increased student internships and the forging of additional public-private partnerships, I am confident the College will continue our ability to produce a creative workforce that remains highly competitive in a rapidly, evolving global economy,”said Schriner.

The FIU College of Architecture and The Arts opened its Miami Beach Urban Studio (MBUS) in the historic 420 Lincoln Road Building. It is a dynamic learning venue uniquely situated to partner with and engage the diverse Miami Beach cultural community and to provide The FIU College of Architecture and The Arts students with a Worlds Ahead education.
