Because the history of the unique architecture of Miami Beach is world famous, including Art Deco, MiMo and Spanish architectural designs, the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Task Force on Tourism and the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority (MBVCA), have launched a photo and essay contest for students entitled, “The Architectural History of Miami Beach Photo Essay Contest.”

The Photo Essay Contest is divided into three categories: Grades 1st through 5th; Grades 6th through 8th; and Grades 9th through 12th.

Individual students can create a “photo essay” that “describes” a style of architecture in Miami Beach, explaining why it is their favorite.  The student must also identify a specific building or building element that best exemplifies this style.  The building must have been built before 1960 and cannot be a private residence today. The essay can be no more than two pages, typed, and must include the building’s name and location and the name of the architect. Grades 1 through 5 may submit handwritten entries.

Submissions may be in color, sepia, or black & white. Elementary school students in Grades 1 through 5 may submit color drawings instead of photos.  All entries must be postmarked by November 15, 2010. Judges will include The Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Task Force members. Final judging will be done by Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL).

“Many young people growing up in Miami Beach don’t realize how unusual some of our buildings are. We have the largest collection of Art Deco and MiMo buildings anywhere in the world. It’s important that our young people find out just how special that is. Their hometown is like none other in the world” said Miami Beach Mayor Matti H. Bower.

All prizes have been donated by participants in the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce’s INCard Program, an initiative of the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Task Force on Tourism. The complimentary Miami Beach INCard provides special value discounts from Miami Beach businesses for residents and tourists.

Prizes will be awarded to students at the sole discretion of the Judges appointed by the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority. There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places within each category.
