Miami Beach Takes another Strong Stride toward Ensuring Gender Equality

— Implementing Gender-Neutral Bathrooms at City-Owned Buildings and Facilities —

Embracing equality for all persons, the City of Miami Beach has a long, decorated history of championing human rights and standing up against discrimination. Further serving the City’s mission to provide all-inclusive City-owned facilities, the diverse community is installing gender-neutral signage on all its single-user restrooms throughout the island to ensure every individual has equal access regardless of his or her gender or sexual identity.

“Our public spaces should be just that – open to the entire public,” noted Commissioner Michael Góngora. “I’m excited to see this common-sense initiative not only provide a safe and comfortable space for all who visit and live in Miami Beach, but see it foster an environment of inclusion and mutual respect by normalizing gender-neutral bathrooms in our everyday lives.”

The resolution stems from the City’s LGBTQ committee recommendation and qualifies as bonus criteria in maintaining Miami Beach’s perfect Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Municipal Equality Index. The single stall restrooms being currently adapted include those at City Hall, UNIDAD’s indoor restrooms, 10 Street Auditorium, Normandy Teen Center, Police North End Substation, among various others.
