The City of Miami Beach has been awarded the Outstanding Achievement City Livability Award by The U.S. Conference of Mayors. The U.S. Conference of Mayors will present the award to Miami Beach officials on Wednesday, July 13, 9:00 a.m. at Miami Beach City Hall, 1700 Convention Center Drive, commission chambers, third floor.
For the past 32 years, the City Livability Awards Program has been one of the most competitive programs sponsored by The U.S. Conference of Mayors. This program selects communities that have developed innovative and successful programs that improve the quality of life for city residents.
“Because of its success and innovation, our bike-sharing program was selected as the project highlighted in our application,” said Miami Beach City Manager Jorge M. Gonzalez. “DecoBike addresses our goal of enhancing mobility throughout the community and is revolutionizing the way residents and tourists get around.”
DecoBike has become a valuable mode of alternative public transportation with bike station locations that are available 24/7 at or near major commercial and retail centers, parks, visitor destinations, major roads, and parking facilities. When complete, DecoBike will be the most comprehensive, year-round bike-sharing program in the United States with 115 solar-powered bicycle stations and approximately 1,000 bicycles conveniently placed throughout the 7.1 square mile city.
“DecoBike has logged more than 100,000 uses in just in just ten weeks with only a portion of our fleet deployed, making it a very successful launch,” said Colby Reese, chief marketing officer, DecoBike, LLC, the developer and operator of the innovative program.
“This successful program makes green and sustainable transportation part of our everyday life,” Gonzalez continued. “I am confident that DecoBike will continue to be a successful and valuable program in the City of Miami Beach.”
This year, hundreds of mayors and their city governments submitted applications with a wide range of programs, to compete for the honor of calling themselves a City Livability Award winner. Ten winners were selected from the large cities category and ten winners were selected from the small cities category. Miami Beach was selected for an award in the small cities program (includes cities smaller than 100,000 in population). The 20 award-winning cities were determined by an independent panel of judges selected by The U.S. Conference of Mayors.
