miamiartzine.com Celebrates 10 Years as Online Arts Publication

Miamiartzine.com, the online publication dedicated to promoting the arts in South Florida, announces a celebration in tribute to an historic milestone. On Monday, Oct. 26, from 6 to 10 p.m., miamiartzine.com will celebrate ten years as an online arts publication. Festivities, which are open to the public, will be held at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden.

Those honored that evening will be 35 writers, editors and photographers who have been part of MAZ for the last 10 years.

“We have had many talented individuals that have worked hard for miamiartzine.com and have contributed to its longevity,” said Harvey J. Burstein, founder and publisher. In 2005, miamiartzine.com was founded by Burstein as an online arts publication. A program of the Miami Beach Arts Trust, Burstein saw a need when newspapers began cutting their arts coverage, leaving the arts community and arts lovers without a place for features and reviews. It was his vision to create an online publication that would contribute to the arts community by not only supporting the arts – theater, dance, visual arts, classical music and other arts disciplines – but would give arts writers a voice and photographers a platform to contribute original content about South Florida’s arts scene.

“MAZ features a staff of journalists and photographers – many of whom have gone on to write and photograph for other publications after getting exposure from our online publication. Many of the original contributors have been with the magazine since it started,” said Burstein.

For the Oct. 26 celebration, Miami Beach artist Sid Daniels has created original artwork, which will be included on a commemorative mug that will be given as a gift to attendees. In January 2016, Daniels will be featured in the book “101 Contemporary Artists,” (publisher, Terrence Sanders).

The public art project, Giants in the City, a contemporary visual art experience curated by Alejandro Mendoza, will be on display. The large sculptures have been on display from Miami to Monte Carlos.

Entertainment will be provided by Grammy nominated Latin Jazz pianist Kiki Sanchez. Sanchez, an internationally recognized performer and recording artist, is well known for his original arrangements of Latin, jazz and salsa music. The night’s performance is donated by KCC Productions.

Guests will also take part in a silent auction that features restaurant certificates, gift items, theater and concert tickets, commemorative art and other valuable items graciously donated by businesses and supporters throughout South Florida. Food for the evening will be dinner and dessert crepe stations, generously donated by CrepeMaker. Additional food will be available, donated by the Liquor Lounge, Miami Beach.

In its ten years, miamiartzine has grown in popularity. “With social media becoming important, Facebook and Twitter has helped miamiartzine expand its readership,” said Michelle F. Solomon, editor, miamiartzine.com. Additionally, the MAZ Calendar listing promotes community organizations and the miamiartzine mission to be a voice for the arts.

miamiartzine.com hosts the MAZ 10th Anniversary Extravaganza on Monday, Oct. 26, 2015 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, 2000 Convention Center Drive, Miami Beach, Fla.
