STEP UP: Global Spectrum Total Environmental Plan

Global Spectrum has saved the City of Miami Beach hundreds of thousands of dollars in the operation of the Miami Beach Convention Center through implementation of a company-wide total environmentally conscious plan known as STEP UP (Global Spectrum Total Environmental Plan).  In the 2009 fiscal year, Global Spectrum saved over 100 tons of recyclable materials that would have otherwise ended-up in the landfill.
“We made sure when we arrived in Miami Beach that reducing facility costs with a more effective energy plan was one of our main goals,” said Balsam. “This program is designed to conserve energy, recycle goods, and promote a healthy environment for the Convention Center and City of Miami Beach.”
In addition to these energy savings, Global Spectrum’s operations department has developed a single-stream recycling program intended to simplify the recycling process for the Convention Center, as well as its exhibitors and attendees at their consumer shows, tradeshows, and other events.  Some of our 2009 highlights include the following:
Completed retrofit of manual HVAC controls to a fully automated state of the art computerized system.
Adjusted 3 way water valves which consume considerable energy to operate as a 2 way water valve, which decreases the amount of pumps needed to push chilled water through the facility.
Installed a more efficient route for our chill water distribution system for the west side. This project allowed us to remove 4 chilled water pumps to decrease our electrical usage.
Added Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) to 5 chilled water pumps.
Removed 7 stand alone DX rooftop mounted package units and replaced the DX units with 7 high efficiency chilled water air handlers with VFDs.
Added a 100% fresh air intake unit to the west side.
Installed 24 VFDs for the ballrooms, which allows us to regulate the air temperature more efficiently.
Conducted energy reduction study through city contract by Ameresco Training and education for all employees to reduce energy consumption.
Replaced nearly 100% of all cleaning products to “green certified,” which includes: restroom hand towels, soap, and toilet paper.
Purchased an environmentally friendly Tennant T5 floor scrubber throughout the building, this particular scrubber does not require cleaning chemicals.
