This Week in BeachWitch Way: Sustainable Energy

This Week in BeachWitch Way: Sustainable EnergyBeachWitch is still reeling over the incredulous comments made by US Representative Joe Barton, member of House Committee on Energy, quoted as saying: “Wind is the way you shift heat from areas where it’s hotter to areas where it’s cooler. That’s what wind is. Wouldn’t it be ironic if in the interest of global warming we mandated massive switches to energy, which is a finite resource, which slows the winds down, which causes the temperature to go up?” This utterance (we refuse to call it a thought- that would do a disservice to thinking) is not only preposterous, but is also completely ignorant and inane. The inference of which implies that our coal, oil, and natural gas resources are infinite: FALSE. To suggest that wind turbines will slow the rotation of the Earth and raise temperatures worldwide, is tantamount to saying that Superman exists, and can reverse time by flying at supersonic speeds around the planet. The notion that one of our government leaders— an elected official on the energy committee no less—had the temerity to speak such nonsense only highlights just how askew our energy policy truly is. Moreover, the fact that this representative of our nation had received some support gravely points out how misguided and ill-informed some of our citizens are when it comes to understanding the need for increased alternative energy sources.

Let’s look at some FACTS. According to the the International Energy Agency, “the development of affordable, inexhaustible and clean solar energy technologies will have huge longer-term benefits. It will increase countries’ energy security through reliance on an indigenous, inexhaustible and mostly import-independent resource, enhance sustainability, reduce pollution, lower the costs of mitigating climate change, and keep fossil fuel prices lower than otherwise. These advantages are global. Hence the additional costs of the incentives for early deployment should be considered learning investments; they must be wisely spent and need to be widely shared.” Actual science tells us that the solar energy that reaches the planet in a single year has twice as much potential energy that will ever be obtained from ALL of the combined energy of our non-renewable resources of coal, oil, natural gas, and mined uranium. (Source:Wikipedia/Solar Energy). Even BeachWitch was surprised at that revelation and it’s our mission to share such information with you!

Luckily there are many ways to increase our use of renewable energies: solar panel and wind turbine installations, geothermal heating technologies, biomass energy conversion from algae and bio-fuel production, and by harnessing the power of water through hydro-powered dams and kinetic wave turbines. While some of these technologies are prohibitive at the local consumer level, we in Florida and around the entire US can take advantage of some more affordable options by simply opting for energy offsets provided by many firms around the nation. One such example is Pear Energy with offices right here in Miami Beach! They make it incredibly easy for anyone to buy renewable energy for their home or business without installing solar panels or wind turbines.

Pear Energy partners with wind and solar producers all across America that generate 100% clean, renewable energy by working directly with small scale cooperative, municipal and community owned enterprises. When a wind turbine or solar array generates electricity, two things are produced: electricity and the credit for producing the electricity cleanly. That credit is called a Renewable Energy Certificate, or “REC,” and tracks exactly 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity that was made cleanly. Buyers can then choose a service provider that sources renewable energy, such as Pear which in turn buys these RECs on your behalf. While these sources intermingle with other non-renewable power sources, it is important to note that the energy offset is directly measured and quantified to allow for even more of these wind and solar farms to be created and utilized. By switching to Pear Energy, you are actually: reducing your carbon footprint, fighting climate change, and helping to build a greener economy. Your electric bill will actually go towards building new sources of energy and jobs in America without ever erecting a solar panel or wind panel. Simply put, Pear Energy is the simplest, easiest, and fastest way to green your home or business. There are no switching costs, no contracts, and no cancellation fee ….signing up is virtually effortless!
