193 pets from Miami-Dade Animal Services found loving homes during Clear the Shelters event

Hundreds of South Florida pet lovers opened their hearts and their homes to Miami-Dade Animal Services’ dogs and cats during the second annual Clear the Shelters event on Saturday, July 23, 2016. A total of 193 pets were adopted at Animal Services breaking last year’s record of 161 pet adoptions.

IMG_1910To encourage and motivate pet lovers in their decision to adopt, fees were waived on all dogs and cats with adopters only having topay the $27 licensing fee for dogs. Generous sponsors provided pet food and even kitty litter to help adopters start developing their pet care supplies.  Adopters taking home senior pets—dogs and cats over seven years old—or special needs pets also received a pet care package that included special food, bedding and other items to help these heroes care for their newly adopted furry companions.

“Once again, we thank our partners at NBC6 South Florida and Telemundo 51 who helped to create awareness of the need to visit shelters and adopt, not shop for a pet,” said Alex Muñoz, Director of Animal Services. “Our adoption totals this year were particularly significant, close to 50 percent of pets adopted were adult and large dogs,” he added.

IMG_1980Clear the Shelters is a pet adoption campaign started last year by NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations in collaboration with 400 shelters throughout the country and Puerto Rico. Locally, Animal Services partnered with NBC 6 South Florida/WTVJ, Telemundo 51/WSCV and other shelters across South Florida to participate in the nationwide pet adoption initiative to help find every shelter pet a loving forever family.

In South Florida a total of 580 pets were adopted from all participating shelters including Miami-Dade Animal Services, the Humane Society of Broward County, Humane Society of Greater Miami and Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Division. Nationwide over 45,000 pets were adopted.
