Announcing the Grand Opening of the new Miami-Dade Animal Services Pet Adoption and Protection Center

New shelterOn Monday, June 13, 2016, at 11 a.m., Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez, Chairman Jean Monestime, District 12 Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz and members of the Board of County Commissioners, the Miami-Dade County Animal Services Department along with the Miami-Dade County Internal Services Department; will host the grand opening of the Animal Services Pet Adoption and Protection Center located at 3599 NW 79 Avenue, Doral, Florida.

Miami-Dade Animal Services’ Pet Adoption and Protection Center has set the new standard for animal rescue and care by focusing on providing a comfortable, relaxed environment for homeless pets and enhancing the customer experience. With a total property area at approximately 4.79 acres, the new facility is the first rescue and protection center of its scale to open in Miami-Dade County, and surpasses the standard requirements of any shelter in the USA.

“The new Pet Adoption and Protection center is a significant acco_ARR4098mplishment for our pet loving community and will help Animal Services continue to save lives,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez.  “We built the best facility to help ensure every pet gets adopted, offer more low-cost spay/neuter services and enrich our life -saving programs,” he added.

Advanced medical technology and equipment complement the skilled surgeons and support staff and an open floor plan increases efficiency and maximizes surgical flow. The expanded surgical suites and a streamlined pre-admission process enhance and support high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter services. “Completion of this new Pet Adoption and Protection Center is an important achievement in our continued efforts to increase spay/neuter services since it increases surgical capacity by more than 50 percent, said Alex Muñoz, Director of the Miami-Dade Animal Services Department. “Accessible and affordable spay/neuter surgeries are an important component in the efforts towards no kill goals, he added.”

The Pet Adoption and Protection Center was created in a modern mall-like layout to help create a pleasant pet adoption experience where pet lovers can adopt-not-shop. Dog housing is increased by more than 25 percent and cat housing capacity almost doubles. The entire facility is climate controlled to adjust for the animals’ needs in the South Florida climate, making it the largest air-conditioned animal shelter in the country. The air-conditioning system is designed to control cross contamination of disease, facilitating six air changes per hour in the canine/feline adoption suites facilitates ventilation of fresh outside air, mitigating odors and reducing the spread of disease.

“The Internal Services Department worked closely with the Animal Services to renovate and retrofit an existing building on the property based on best practices in animal housing,” said Tara C. Smith, Director of the Internal Services Department. We created an environment that is inviting to families, where they can come find their “furever friend” as well as a place of protection for our furry residents, she added.

Miami-Dade Animal Services Pet Adoption and Protection Center will open to the public for adoptions at 1 pm on Monday June 13, 2016 after the ribbon cutting ceremony. Full services will resume on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at the new location 3599 NW 79 Avenue, Doral, Florida.

  1. Is it true that they still have animals in the Medley facility without anyone taking care of them. If this is so, that is such a shame and the City of Miami should see about it. I am an animal lover and reject this situation!!!!

  2. Why are there STILL dogs in the decrepit Medley facility? Are they being killed and not accounted for so MDAS can keep this no-kill facade going? This is late August. Drive by. You’ll hear plenty of dogs barking but guards won’t let you in? Why guard a supposedly empty building?

  3. finally,it seemed to be 25 years in the planning.hope the improvement is not only exterior but change of attitude and treatment of the animals and really ashow of caring in every respect.

  4. Congratulations. It’s a great idea to protect our pets. On February 22, 2016 the F.B.I. Web-Site announced, that the animal cruelty it is a felony, and will be include in the data base of Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR). I’ve seen first-hand the result of neglected and abusive behavior on our pet populations. It’s important that the cities councils passed ordinances about it.

  5. Hopefully this is not a nice air-conditioned shelter for the workers there. I have seen dogs infected with ticks, covered in feces.

  6. A beautiful new facility for the homeless pets of Miami-Dade county. I thank you so much! I hope and pray this will be the beginning of a whole new mind-set to help each of these dogs and cats find new FOREVER homes and to help each of with their individual needs, what ever that may be, so ALL will be adoptable. I would love to see this shelter, (this is where my heart is) become totally no kill…with the exception of pets who are to sick or injured to be put back together again. So happy to hear it will now be Air-Conditioned!! Congrats on the brand new facility.

  7. Still have breed bans that tear families apart and push the burden of saving those lives into another community.

  8. You should be a no kill….instead of making double room for cats! What is the point? Cats can take care of themselve…do spay/neuter and release. If the mindset of the fools that work there now doesent change…you have done nothing! Kill in air-conditioning and more comfortable for who is all. For God’s sake…..it can be done.

  9. The MDAS in Hialeah should be renovated as well. The conditions are atrocious for the animals in there. Animals are less likely to get adopted and are at a higher risk for euthanization. The cages are not kept clean. I’ve seen 2-3 dogs in one cage with stool all over them. Dirty water and not enough food and let’s not mention the unit where animals are quarantine for horrendous skin conditions (which are not getting treated and are being euthanized.) There is so much money in the county yet they can’t provide decent conditions for these angels with no voices.

  10. that is wonderful !!!… but please start with the dogs in the shelters they are in desperate need of this…its so sad.

  11. Set the standard of making this a NO KILL shelter!!! Get some programs going to adopt these animals instead of killing them. They have to die because they are homeless!! So immoral!!

  12. I hope saving and homing is the goal! The name suggests that!! Please do all you can to provide care, comfort and a future for these fur kids! The Health Trust initiative seems to be ignored for four years!! Spay/ neuter/ licensing all need to be addressed! Animal cruelty prosecuted!
