Miami Lakes professional stylist Carlo Krockel recently named Vikki Fernandez as the recipient of a free makeover in honor of those who serve in uniform. Vikki Fernandez is sponsored by American Legion Post 32 in Hialeah. Krockel, a veteran himself, decided to honor veterans this month as part of his year-long makeover series.
Fernandez, is the wife of Major Hector Fernandez, deployed to Iraq in 2009, and now assigned to the Southern Command Headquarters in Doral. Major Fernandez serves in the J-9 Partnering Division and will be leaving his wife and 7 year old son again this coming October when he is deployed once again to the Middle East.
“I was in the Army myself and I wanted to help another soldier or their wife by giving them a new look for their homecoming,” Krockel said. “Perhaps my small gesture will inspire others to embrace and honor our country’s service people.”
Krockel significantly downplays his role in the military when asked about it, but he was enlisted in the 8th Infantry Division. Personal styling was a passion he fully pursued after he completed his service.
“(This) goes a long way to help ease some of the pain endured by our military spouses,” said Gary E. Cardenas, Commander of Post 32 in Hialeah.
Mr. Cardenas concluded his recommendation of Major Fernandez and his family for the recognition by saying quote, “We often hear many words spoken about the sacrifices of our soldiers, as they are called upon to serve; a sacrifice we must recognize. However, we must recognize the sacrifices made by their spouses, who after their deployment must bear the burden of dealing with home and family issues by themselves, and the constant fear as to whether they will ever make it back home.”
The makeover event will be held on Friday, July 27. Fernandez will receive hair color consultation, highlights, post-color conditioning cocktail hair treatment, a hair-cut, blow dry and a new outfit will also be provided.
