The City of Miami Gardens Parks and Recreation Department held the 3rd Annual Black History Showcase, titled “A Night of Entertainment” on February 29, 2012. Participants of the City of Miami Gardens Shining Stars After-School program, the Future Men and Women of Miami Gardens Mentoring program and City staff coordinated various skits, activities, information and tributes to our forefathers for their achievements and contributions to our society.
Over 100 people of all ages in the community attended the Showcase that began with the unforgettable recording of the Star Spangled Banner performed by (the late) Whitney Houston and a video presentation of the Negro National Anthem – “Lift Every Voice and Sing”. Throughout the evening students acknowledged the contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall and Harriet Tubman, by performing various skits reenacting the accomplishments, trials and tribulations each of these historical figures endured. In addition, the evening featured performances by the City of Miami Gardens Super Soul Steppers, The City of Miami Gardens Alliance Youth Drum Line, and the Crumpers of Rolling Oaks Park.
The Black History Month Showcase was a big success that emphasized positive portrayals of African American Heritage in education and entertainment. The evening closed with a fashion walk where staff of The Betty T Ferguson Recreational Complex modeled vintage clothing from the 1950’s through the1990’s era and awarded the honor of “The Passing of the Torch” recognition to Assistant City Manager, Vernita Nelson for her endless contributions to the City of Miami Gardens history. It is our goal to continue our efforts of remembering and acknowledging those that have paved the way for us to shine today.
