During the month of October, the City of Miami Gardens Golden Garden Senior Program hosted an exciting night filled with fun, food and educational information on breast cancer. This event is held annually by Aventura Hospital and Medical Center in conjunction with Aventura Diagnostic Breast Center and the Aventura Comprehensive Cancer Center. This event was the peak of a month-long initiative to elevate awareness and early detection for breast cancer by promoting annual mammograms.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer will affect well over 200,000 new women by the end of 2011, but if breast cancer is detected early, the five-year survival rate is about 96 percent. The mission of Women’s Night Out was to celebrate over two million survivors in the United States who have survived breast cancer due to improved treatments, preemptive methods, and increased mammography screening rates.

This event provided many individuals with the needed awareness regarding the threats of breast cancer and the valuable information about this disease. The City of Miami Gardens staff and participants were entertained and thoroughly educated at this spectacular event. Women’s Night Out provided our seniors with an amazing evening and the true meaning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
