PINECREST CHOREOGRAPHER PRESENTS DANCE CONCERT IN THE FALLS AREA BEFORE PERFORMING IN SOUTH KOREA

Physically integrated dance company, Karen Peterson and Dancers (KPD), proudly announce their upcoming dance concert, Repertory Favorites. This production presents a curated selection of popular pieces from their repertoire at Excello Dance Space on May 4 & 5, 2024. Following their successful 5th Annual Forward Motion Dance Festival & Conference, KPD’s dynamic program concludes their spring season before the Pinecrest-based dance company features their latest work in Seoul, South Korea, at the KIADA Korea International Accessible Dance Festival in August 2024.

KPD’s Repertory Favorites is a recurring concert event series crafted to showcase selections from the company’s repertoire, unveil their latest works, and present emerging pieces in development. This year’s program features 3 distinctive dance pieces, each offering a unique exploration of movement and narrative. Set at KPD’s headquarters, Excello Dance Space, nestled in the Falls Industrial Warehouse Area in Pinecrest, Miami, this intimate studio production features 3 showings throughout the weekend, with 2 performances on Saturday and 1 afternoon show on Sunday. Included in the last program on Sunday is a post-show reception and talk-back session, providing the audience with an opportunity to engage in a Q&A with the dancers to delve into their process, inspirations, and the exciting developments for the dance company in the upcoming months.

Among the highlights is KPD’s piece “THE AXIS,” a captivating exploration of the forces that draw individuals together and push them apart, featuring company dancers Sun Young Park, Penelope Huerta, and Jesus Vidal. This piece will have its world premiere at Excello before gracing international stages in Seoul, South Korea, at the KIADA Korea International Accessible Dance Festival in August.

Expressing her excitement for the upcoming concert, Karen Peterson Corash, Founder and Artistic Director of KPD shares, “We’re thrilled to unveil our latest piece to our local community before performing it globally in South Korea. Representing Miami on an international platform is a profound honor, and we’re eager to present this impactful work to audiences worldwide.”

Also included on the program is “IN YOUR SHOES,” where 4 KPD dancers will lead the audience on a spirited journey set to popular blues and pop tunes. The quartet, comprising Marjorie Burnett, Adam Eckstat, Sun Young Park, and Narieka Masla, promises an engaging experience filled with lively rhythms and dynamic choreography. Additionally, audiences will get an exclusive first look at “ENDLESS,” a work-in-progress serving as a poignant reflection on the devastations of war. With a cast featuring Reshma Anwar, Anastasiya Arkin, Sun Young Park, Narieka Masla, Jay Crawford, Marjorie Burnett, and Adam Eckstat, the performance offers insight into the creative process and emotional depth of the work.

Performances are scheduled at Excello Dance Space (8700 SW 129th Terrace, Miami, FL) on Saturday, May 4th at 2 PM and 7 PM and Sunday, May 5th at 2PM, followed by a post-performance reception and talk-back session. Honor Earth Day with South Florida PBS’ We’re All Plastic People Now

South Florida PBS (WPBT, WXEL, & Health Channel) invites you to honor Earth Day with us by tuning in to watch Emmy award-winning documentary We’re All Plastic People Now, by filmmaker Rory Fielding. This film investigates the hidden story of plastic and its impact on human health. South Florida PBS is pleased to be a co-producer and presenting station for this important and timely documentary.

“South Florida PBS is proud to present the Emmy-award winning We’re All Plastic People Now to public television viewers across the country,” says Joyce Belloise, Senior Vice President of Content & Station Manager. “This program aligns with our mission to bring important topics like environmental conservation and health to the forefront in an engaging and enlightening way.”

With an introduction by actor and ocean preservationist Ted Danson, We’re All Plastic People Now investigates the hidden story of plastic and its effects on human health. In an era of throw-away ease, convenience may be costing us our well-being. Plastics have been found inside our bodies— in our colons, our brains, in developing embryos and even breast milk.

Scientists around the country are sounding the alarm, but without public education and corporate buy-in, there is little that can be done. We’re All Plastic People Now asks the question, how much evidence do we need before we decide to act?

“Rory Fielding’s ‘We’re All Plastic People Now’ shows the harrowing reality of how prevalent plastic pollution is in our lives. Plastic is everywhere from the depths of the ocean to the air we breathe and the water we drink. The future can include a world with less plastic if we stop the flow of needless single-use plastic and invest in reusable systems together,” said Christy Leavitt, campaign director for Oceana who is featured in the film.

Oceana is the largest international advocacy organization dedicated solely to ocean conservation.

Funding for this program was provided in part by Gumbo Limbo Coastal Stewards and by Monica & Terry Mayotte.

Tune in on Saturday, April 20th at 10PM on WPBT and Thursday, April 18th at 8PM on WXEL to watch We’re All Plastic People Now.

We’re All Plastic People Now is distributed through NETA and scheduled for broadcast during the month of April on many public television stations across the country.  Check your local listings for more information.

State of Kid offers multiple children’s activities, clothing and more

Several years ago, Alana Oxfeld was the mother of a toddler and was looking for resources to benefit her growing family. Specifically, she was searching for a place where she and other new mothers could interact with their children in a fun and educational way.

Alana didn’t find what she sought, so the Miami mother and businesswoman founded State of Kid in the Design District in 2019 to make the lives of other moms a little less stressful and a lot more fun.

“My goal was to create a one stop shop offering multiple resources for parents of young children,” she explains. “State of Kid offers a range of classes including music, tumbling, ballet, cooking, art, jiu jitsu and more. We also have a retail component featuring a curated selection of toys, gifts and clothing.”

In launching State of Kid, Alana, who has a marketing and communications background, filled a community need, combining children’s retail with enriching classes. State of Kid provides a supervised space for parents and children from newborn to eight years old to play, learn and bond.

“Not long after opening, we saw that demand was surging so we opened two more locations in Miami Beach and South Miami,” she says. “As we’ve continued to grow, it’s become apparent that parents love State of Kid just as much as their children do.”

During the morning hours, class customers are moms with toddlers who aren’t yet in school, whereas the afternoons see the arrival of three- to eight-year-olds. Parents feel welcome in the clean and upscale stores, which are carefully sited near nail salons, fitness studios and shops to allow mom to combine playtime with errands.

“My son loved State of Kid,” says Katie, a mother from Miami. “The quality and range of classes they offer is beyond anything else in Miami. And they have the cutest kids’ clothes and toys in the store. I cannot recommend State of Kid more highly.”

State of Kid also offers Mini Camps during holiday breaks and over the summer. Birthday parties are a big hit as well, with every event tailored specifically to each child. Recently, a Taylor Swift-themed party was a huge hit with children and parents alike. Alana and her staff go all out on events, arranging catering and backdrops, bringing in characters and offering face painting and hair braiding.

Among the curated collection of clothing items for sale at State of Kid include dresses, rompers, onesies, tees, pajamas and sets from brands including Beach Riot, Esme, Louise Misha, Pink Chicken and Rylee + Cru, among many others.

Classes start at $40 with a monthly commitment. To give families the ultimate flexibility, many classes are offered as drop-in beginning at $50 per session.

Danny Smith is first Gables cop to be named to Florida Police Hall of Fame

Retired Coral Gables Police Officer Danny Smith has been named to the Florida Police Officer’s Hall of Fame. He is the first officer from the Coral Gables Police Department to have the honor bestowed upon him. The enshrinement ceremony will take place in Tallahassee at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement headquarters on May 18th

This is not Smith’s first rodeo, however. He was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 in honor of his being named the Most Valuable Player in the 1982 College Baseball World Series, when UM won the National Championship after a stunning five game run during which Smith was a magician as a left-handed relief pitcher.

“When I got the phone call from Governor DeSantis’ office that I was being inducted into the Florida Police Hall of Fame, I had tears in my eyes,” says Smith. “After more than 30 years as a police officer, it’s a phenomenal honor. I know many officers just as worthy of being selected. The ceremony is taking place on my mother’s 84th birthday, so it’s all the more special.”

Over the course of his career, which began as a Florida Highway Patrol Trooper, Smith worked in multiple capacities, serving as a DUI enforcement officer (where he once made four DUI arrests in one night), field training officer and traffic homicide investigator, among other roles. He trained hundreds of Coral Gables officers, four of whom are now majors in the department.

“I’m proud of the fact that I was able to do so many different things in the 30 years I spent in uniform,” he says.

He’s not the only one who is proud.

“It is my great honor to announce that our first ever Coral Gables Police Officer has been selected by Governor DeSantis and the Cabinet to be forever remembered into the State of Florida Police Officers Hall of Fame,” said Coral Gables Chief of Police Edward J. Hudak, Jr.  “Officer Danny Smith who recently retired was selected for induction after being nominated by law enforcement executives and peers alike. Congratulations to Danny on his entire career for the thousands of people that he has touched and lives he has changed and saved. I am honored to call him a colleague, classmate and friend. There is no truer example of what a “Gables Cop” exemplifies.”

Jim Morris, the legendary former University of Miami baseball coach, called Smith to congratulate him on his latest honor. Morris knows a little something about halls of fame. He is a University of Miami Sports Hall of Famer and a College Hall of Famer himself.

And if Smith wasn’t busy enough as a police officer, he spent almost 20 years as the Head Baseball Coach at Palmetto Senior High School. These days, he is enjoying his free time watering the plants and feeding the hummingbirds in his new home in Las Vegas, where he recently moved with his wife Danielle.

“Retirement is an adjustment and I’m going to get a new job soon. I’m not putting on a uniform or a gun belt, though, Smith says with a laugh. “My wife Dani spent 40 years managing the Nick Waddell State Farm office in Pinecrest. Now, she runs a State Farm office near our new home. Every day, I take her lunch…I’m an Uber Eats driver with one customer.”

Dozens of Smith’s family, friends and former police colleagues will be caravanning to Tallahassee to see him be honored on May 18th by Governor DeSantis, himself a former Yale baseball player.

Miami-Dade County: Buy Now!

Gusmans want Olympia Theater back after Miami neglect
Grant Miller

Anyone who has ever bought any property understands how expensive real estate is today. Greater Miami’s inventory across all classes including offices is way more expensive than it was years ago.

So when a deal comes along, you have to jump on it. Like now, or the window closes.

We’ve got that situation in Miami-Dade County right now with the 625,000-square-foot Flagler Corporate Center at 9250 West Flagler St. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levin Cava wants Flagler Corporate to be the new home to some County offices that could include permitting, which right is further south at 11805 SW 26 St. The list price is $205 million, or $328 per square foot.

Commissioner Anthony Rodriguez

Vice Chair Athony Rodriguez, Commissioner from District 10, pushed to pause the item to have the County team negotiate the price. After Commissioner Rodriguez’s efforts prompted talks with the property owner, the County got the price down to $182 million, or $291 per square foot, an 11% discount per square foot.

Miami-Dade County – Buy Now!

This is a heck of a deal compared to the original price and the value of comparable properties. The County should buy now!

To make the deal even more clear, consider the publicly held Lennar Corp. (LEN) paid $68 million, or $318 per square foot, for a 213,182-square foot property at 5505 Blue Lagoon Drive. This is a company with a market cap of $43.9 billion and your County government just scored a better deal than a Fortune 500 company. Lennar’s choice to locate where other Fortune 500 companies are located in Blue Lagoon makes the property more expensive, but the comparison puts things in perspective.

Miami-Dade County – Buy Now!

This is a case of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) that is actually on the money! Literally!

And the kicker on all this is that the property the County has targeted for purchase includes 25.9 acres of land that Miami-Dade can repurpose for housing and other essential services to the community.

The purchase price of $182 million is well below the average of the two independent appraisals.

The financial plan at the new purchase price of $182 million includes an estimated savings of over $800 million by owning versus leasing over time. This is a unique opportunity to purchase a great asset in a central location that will support the growing and diverse needs of the County.

So, for the love of everything that is special about Miami-Dade, it’s time to put your money where your mouth is.

Miami-Dade County: Buy Now!
