St. Thomas Lutheran Church, 17700 Old Cutler Rd., in Palmetto Bay will have a new special event on Sunday, Sept. 14, when it hosts its first annual “Blessing of the Bikes.” Bikes, in this case, refer to motorcycles, and Diana Orme of the church staff invites any and all bikers in the community to attend. “We welcome everyone to come as you are with your bikes, bring your family and friends, and join us in this special celebration,” Orme said.

“We thought this would be appropriate for our local bikers as the Peterson’s Key West Poker Run is Sept. 18 through 21.”

The ceremony will take place at 11:30 a.m. in the south parking lot following the church service. Coffee and refreshments will be provided.

Lars Schmekel, a member of the church who rides a motorcycle on a regular basis, said he is looking forward to the special event there.

“With the upcoming Key West Poker Run, and Biketoberfest in Daytona, wethought it would be nice for  Pastor Daniel Coy to bless us and our bikes before we head out on our ventures,” Schmekel said. Pastor Coy explained the reason behind this first ever Blessing of the Bikes.

“Bikers in our community enjoy riding and helping others,” Pastor Coy said. “We bless them in their travels as we recall the Lord who guided Abraham and Sarah in their pilgrimage and Hagar and Ishmael in their journey and the people of the East by the star to the baby Jesus. As they set out in travel may their ways be safe and their homecomings joyful.”
