Award-winning, girl-empowering GEM Summer Arts Camp is back

This summer, girls ages 6-15 will have an opportunity to express their artistic and creative sides, while developing valuable life skills at the award-winning GEM (Girls Empowerment and Mentoring) Summer Arts Camp.

And while your child already may display talents like those of Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis, self-portrait maven Freda Kahlo or environmental writer Marjory Stoneman Douglas, no experience is required for this camp, just a love for all things art.

Now in its eighth season, this multi-arts program presented by the Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department includes a variety of arts classes and workshops: Visual and Performing Arts (Dance, Music, Painting, Arts & Crafts, Theatre, Oriental Arts, and Photography); Journalism, focusing on technology; Women’s History, and Spanish Literature.

G.E.M. Camp runs June 12-Aug. 11, at two locations — The Women’s Park, ages 10-15, 10251 W. Flagler St., and The Fair–Fine Arts Gallery, ages 6-9, 10901 Coral Way. Registration is underway at The Women’s Park for both age groups.

Camp is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and offers 7:30 a.m. early drop-off and 6 p.m. late pickup options. The cost is $100/week, plus a one-time annual registration fee of $12. For more information, call 305-480-1717.

Campers will receive mentoring and resources from professors and administrators from Barry University, FIU and Miami Dade College; organizations such Perez Art Museum-Miami, HistoryMiami Museum, FIU Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, and Futurama Art Gallery at Little Havana, as well as community leaders from the fields of government, arts, academia, and business. The camps culminate with a Summer Arts Showcase.

“GEM’s inclusive arts program provides opportunities for girls to build on the rich artistic power within themselves, take risks, welcome challenges, and forge lasting friendships,” said Vivian Greer-Digon, GEM program manager. “While our camps are great fun, expertly structured programming and mentoring provides them with the necessary tools to activate their limitless potential and sense of pride and be successful in life.”

Miami-Dade Parks’ GEM program began in the summer of 2010 as a pilot program initiated by the department’s RAICES Hispanic Cultural Arts Center at Miller Drive Park. The GEM program is funded by The Children’s Trust, a dedicated source of revenue established by voter referendum to improve the lives of children and families in Miami-Dade County by making strategic investments in their future.
