Palmetto Bay’s own new Junior Orange Bowl Queen Leia Schwartz and her father David Schwartz joined with ESPN analyst and former Miami Heat player Jamal Mashburn on Dec. 6 for a special event conducted at Roby George Park in Homestead to raise awareness on the seriousness of influenza.

Leia, a village resident who was crowned Junior Orange Bowl Queen on Nov. 7, has had to cope with severe life threatening asthma her entire life and has been a poster child for the American Lung Association since 2001, so she understands the seriousness of influenza, a disease that kills over 36,000 people annually.

“The flu is such a prevalent and widespread epidemic that it is very important young children receive their influenza vaccination in order to stay healthy,” Leia said.

Duirng the event, Leia and her father, who also is an asthma sufferer, not only served as spokespersons for the campaign, they also played a big role in organizing the event at Roby George Park with the help of the Early Development of Global Education (EDGE) foundation, Cooney/Waters Group, and Walgreens Pharmacy, which supplied the nurses and donated 200 vaccinations to underprivileged children.

  1. The Early Development of Global Education is such a wonderful organization that does so much in the community and in other countries. Its a shame media doesn't focus on what's important.
