Summer Tennis Camp serves up fun and training for kids

Parents with hopeful young tennis stars ages 5 to 17, or youngsters just looking for something different to do during the summer, may be interested in the Tennis Summer Camp put on by the Village of Palmetto Bay Parks and Recreation Department.

Operated at the Tennis Center at Coral Reef Park, 7895 SW 152 St., the program is run by USPTA-PTR professionals Lee Pettis and Kara Borromeo, Monday to Friday now through Aug. 17. There are beginner to intermediate levels.

“It’s quite extensive,” said Pettis. “For 10 and under we use the USTA 10 and Under Tennis QuickStart format.”

There are several program options avail- able according to Borromeo, the other head pro at the tennis center.

“They can attend half day sessions from 9 a.m. to noon for $115 per week, or full day sessions from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for $175 per week,” she said. “We also offer an extended day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for $225 per week.”

The daily schedule starts with a 9 a.m. to 9:15 drop off, then from 9:15 a.m. to noon are stretching, warm-up, drills, skills instruction, indoor games and activities. Groups will rotate for one hour and 15- minute sessions with pros. There are weekly or daily options.

From noon to 1 p.m. is lunch (not provided by camp) and from 1 to 3 p.m. are tennis activities, match play and games. From 3 to 5 p.m. are indoor games and activities, with 5 to 6 p.m. for dismissal and pickup. On Fridays are scheduled field trips (Game Time, Strike Miami, movies and Marlins Park).
