Something that was very popular was the Bike-B-Que event that the Village of Palmetto Bay participated in jointly on Saturday, April 25 with the Town of Cutler Bay as part of the 2015 Earth Week celebration. Hundreds of bicyclists gathered at Lakes by the Bay Park in Cutler Bay before working their way north along the bike path to Ludovici Park in Palmetto Bay for a delicious barbeque lunch, a bike rodeo and other fun activities for kids. With a police escort to keep the route safe and perfect weather it turned out to be one of the best events of the spring. With something that much fun we’re betting they’ll do it again next year, too.
Gentle Yoga by the Bay is programming that will take place at Thalatta Estate, 17301 Old Cutler Road, starting Sunday May 17, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. The instructor is Maria Luisa Tovio. It will continue on Sundays, May 24, June 7 and 14, August 2 and 9. You will need to sign a one-time waiver, bring your own yoga mat and water bottle, but it’s free! Something else at Thalatta Estate is the 2015 educational seminar series hosted by the Village’s Parks and Recreation Department that focuses on the community and environment with free discussions by The Institute for Regional Conservation. On May 21 there’s a free 40-minute discussion followed by a Q&A on “Natives for Your Neighborhood,” presented by Lindsey Roland Nieratka. NFYN is changing a backyard hobby into a powerful conservation tool for South Florida. This workshop will include an introduction to native landscaping, benefits to homeowners, benefits to South Florida ecosystems, how to get started, and where to buy plants. Responsible Gardening Workshops at Thalatta Estate continue with “Flower Arranging Tropicals” on May 13 at 7 p.m. Master Gardener Terri Stephen is giving the presentation, in partnership with UF/Miami-Dade County Extension. Call 305-259-1234 for information.

World War II vets take note… on Friday, June 12 the Homestead Military Affairs Committee will host an event at Homestead Air Reserve Base from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. to honor men and women who served in our United States armed forces during WWII. If you were in the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines or Coast Guard between 1938 and 1945 you are invited to attend and bring photos and memorabilia for display.
