The Community Outreach Unit of the Village of Palmetto Bay Policing Unit will host an inaugural Safety and Security Fair on Saturday, Oct. 11. Information will be available to residents on a variety of topics related to home and personal safety.

“October is Crime Prevention Month, so this is tied in with that,” said Officer Peter Judge, one of the event organizers.

The fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Palmetto Bay Municipal Center located at 9705 E. Hibiscus St.

Besides representatives from the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) there will be vendors and agencies with information on water safety, pool safety, locksmiths, window security, citizen crime watch and boating safety.

MDFR will have information on alarms and fire extinguishers, Parenting magazine and the Keeping Kids Safe Foundation will offer tips, the Deering Estate will provide guidelines on poisonous plants, and fingerprinting and photo records for children will be offered. Officer Judge said that other features will be available as well.

We’re going to have Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s static display helicopter; we’re going to have a company, Safer Kids and Homes, that will do car seat checkups on your child’s passenger seat to make sure it’s installed properly,” Judge said. “Home Depot will be setting up a Kids Zone and we’ll have food vendors.”

One participant should be of special interest to those concerned with identity theft, according to Officer Judge.

“We’re in touch with a company, Florida Shredding Corporation, which deals with shredding boxes and papers and things, so hopefully residents will be able to bring out old checks, old tax forms and things they have sitting around that should be shredded,” Judge said.

Parking will be provided at the Municipal Center and nearby for those driving to the event. “We’re going to use our parking lot,” Judge said.

“We’re going to have our tents set up in the paver area. The static display vehicles will be in the grassy area. I’m going to make arrangements with the TotalBank next door so that the parking spaces there can be used.”
