The Village of Palmetto Bay’s second annual Backto- School Carnival takes place on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 3 to 6 p.m. Admission is free.

Geared toward families with schoolage children, the event will take place at Palmetto Bay Park, 17535 SW 95 Ave., and feature free backpacks and school supplies while they last, unlimited carnival style rides and an inflated slide, as well as vendors selling a variety of food items. The event will be in the open field on the west side of the park.

Fanny Carmona-Gonzalez, Parks and Recreation director, said she is looking forward to the event, especially because there will be twice as many backpacks as were available last year.

“Gus Machado Ford is providing 200 free backpacks with school supplies,” Carmona-Gonzalez said. “We will also have all of our youth sports programs there providing information on their services. The Broncos, the I-Line Sports, the MTI, all of our youth groups that conduct programming out of our parks will be there.”

Parking for the Back-to-School Carnival will be at Palmetto Bay Park and at TotalBank, which is within walking distance of the park. Since it will be sunny and hot, village staffers want people to know that they should wear appropriate clothing and be prepared with sun screen. There will be other activities besides the rides.

“Home Depot will also be there, providing some free school supplies and a craft building workstation where kids can make simple wood projects,” Carmona-Gonzalez said. “It’s been very popular at all of our events.”

She added that it is a good opportunity for children and parents in the community to get together for a relaxing afternoon before school begins again.

“I most definitely enjoy this type of event,” she said. “It’s fun seeing those big smiles on the kids’ faces as they’re going down that big slide.”
