The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), the only national philanthropic organization to invest close to $1 million in local patient services in fiscal 2015, has honored Alejandro Mendieta as chair and Daniel Green as vice chair of the 2016 Miami Man & Woman of the Year campaign.
Mendieta and Green will direct the overall planning and management of the 2016 Miami Man & Woman of the Year campaign, a fundraising drive in which local business leaders volunteer as Champions of Hope and conduct fun, yet competitive efforts to support LLS’s breakthrough research, patient education, co-payment assistance programs, and advocacy efforts on the state and federal level on behalf of blood cancer patients.
Alejandro serves as Practice Development manager for MetLife Premier Client Group of Florida, and is based out of the financial services firm’s Coral Gables office. Daniel is an account manager for the Miami Heat professional basketball club. He has been with the NBA franchise since 2012 and previously served as a financial advisor for MorganStanley Smith Barney and has over 10 years of experience in sports
Mendieta is an active member of the LLS Board of Trustees and served as the board liaison to the 2015 Miami Man & Woman of the Year campaign. He is a top fundraiser for LLS, and served as 2013 Miami Man of the Year in recognition of his efforts.
Green has served on the board of directors for the International Human Factor Youth Development Program, as a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Miami, and as executive director of Noah’s Arc Foundation, 2009-11. He played basketball on the collegiate level as a member of the Colgate University NCAA Division I men’s basketball team.
Mendieta and Green will be hosting a kickoff reception for 2016 Miami Man & Woman of the Year candidates during the final week of March.
Candidates and their campaign team members will then actively fundraise in honor of a survivor boy and girl and on behalf of LLS over the next 10 weeks in a friendly and competitive quest to be crowned 2016 Miami Man or Woman of the Year. The campaign concludes at the 2016 Miami LLS Journey of Hope Gala, set for Saturday, June 11, at the Intercontinental Miami. Sponsorship packages at various tiers are available for this premier-level black-tie event in support of cures for blood cancer patients.
LLS is a nonprofit organization devoted to funding breakthrough research and the acceleration of innovative, life-saving treatments. LLS also provides community based support groups and financial assistance programs for patients and their families, and advocates and mobilizes grassroots support to influence state and federal laws and regulations to ensure all blood cancer patients get access to the treatments and care they need. LLS’s Southern Florida Chapter was founded in 1972 to serve residents who have been touched by blood cancers. The chapter serves Miami- Dade, Broward and Monroe counties in Florida.
