Baptist Health Old Cutler Run Club

Baptist Health Old Cutler Run Club

On September 11, Baptist Health kicked off their inaugural Old Cutler Run Club at Deering Estate. More than 150 participants, from kids to seniors, met up to get fit. The club isn’t only about running. “It’s actually more social than anything else,” said Frankie Ruiz, owner of Run the City, Inc. “We really want everyone here to connect.”

Baptist Health sponsors seven other run clubs in South Florida and welcomes participants of all ages and abilities. Baptist Health’s Maria Luisa Gonzalez Silva explained, “We are hoping this community will come together and support each other in health and exercise.

Participants that show up three times in a row will receive a t-shirt and become an official club member. We promote family and community.”

On this special day, before the run, they gathered for a moment of silence to commemorate the victims of the 9|11 attacks.

From there, the crowd, including dignitaries like Commissioner Daniella Levin-Cava, Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner, Palmetto Bay Mayor Eugene Flinn and Cutler Bay Mayor Peggy Bell broke into groups of differing abilities. The kids even got training on how to run and stretch before exercising.

The trainers, wearing neon Pineapple Pacer emblazed t-shirts, then guided people on 1.6, 3.3 or 3.8 mile circuits. People could choose to run, jog or walk. Palmetto High School student Hudson Cain, who runs cross-country, said, “This is great training for me to improve my times.” Although no one was officially timed, he finished third in the 3.8-mile run, behind only the adult trainers.

This newest run club will take place every Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m., rain or shine. Participants will exercise around historic Old Cutler Road. While this first event started at Deering Estate, going forward the club will meet in Ludovici Park behind the public library at Old Cutler Road and 176 Street. You can LIKE them on Facebook at <Old Cutler Run Club> for the latest information. Participation is free.

Palmetto Senior High’s New Weight Room

Last year, the Miami Palmetto Senior High School PTSA vowed to raise money and replace the school’s aged weight room. On September 22nd, after raising more than $43,000 the brand new room opened with a ribbon cutting.

“With over 1000 student athletes at the school, we know that most of them rely on the school equipment and trainers because they don’t have those resources available at home,” explains PTSA Treasurer Anna Hochkammer. “So, if possible, the health of our football players and in fact all students should be supported by our school.”

“This is huge! To watch the alumni start to rally around this project and this school is what it’s all about. I came back a year or so ago and alumni like me are really stepping up.” remarked Palmetto Senior High’s Athletic Director Steve Batten. “This is the keystone to improving facilities and opportunities for both athletes and students. It is a step to 21st-century physical fitness and sports training.”

Varsity football right tackle Cyress Gartman added, “This is a turning point for Palmetto. It’s a change in culture so we can become better, stronger and faster. I’m excited to get in here and work.”

Donors included a generous anonymous $10,000 for an individual, $6000 from the PTSA, $6000 raised by Palmetto Bay during a Color Run, $5000 from Panter, Panter, Panter & Sampedro, P.A., plus alumni donation spearheaded by Pinecrest Councilman Jeff Cutler, among others.

Citizens-Led Town Hall for a Better Palmetto Bay

As a reminder, there will be a Town Hall with lots of the Village decision-makers on hand. The event will focus on major topics facing Palmetto Bay, including traffic, parks, the potential development of the Palmetto Bay Village Center and what’s going on with Downtown development and the topic of annexation.

We believe that direct conversation with our Village leaders (and potential leaders) is healthy to keeping our community strong and healthy.

The Palmetto Bay Village Center has graciously donated the space and will host the event in the Palm Room. So come on out October 5, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. to 18001 Old Cutler Road (enter at SW 184 St). Get up-to-date information at: goo.gl/FpLXUe (case sensitive!)
