Each year in mid June, as the temperature warms up and the summer heat sets in, the Alper JCC gets ready to start another funfilled summer of camp; welcoming returning campers as well as the many new excited faces ready to have fun in the sun at the JCC. This year the camp director decided to kick things up a bit and the JCC camp staff is excited to have a handful of new activities for the kids to enjoy this summer.

The first new addition will be a game room where the children will test their skills at games like foosball, air hockey, pingpong, free-throw basketball and more. The game room will also have some table top games as well as a Wii video game station for the gamers in the group.

Children will be able to relax in bean bag chairs if they feel like taking a break to chill out while in the game room. Poly Pong is an exciting and versatile table tennis station that will be situated outside under the trees for the kids to enjoy in the shade this summer.

Poly Pong is a 4- sided ping pong type table for players of all ages and skill levels. You may play with two to over a dozen players at the same time. With more than four players, a new player enters the game with each serve.

The player who just fouled must leave the game and wait in line until his/her turn to reenter. Temporary alliances are formed to enhance game strategy as the game progresses.

There are 20 different games to be played at this multifunctional game station.

Each day the campers get to choose an activity for hobby hour. Hobby hour activities already include sports, art, drama, jewelry making, science, fishing, nature, fitness, rocketry and everything in between. As if more than 40 choices for hobby hour were not enough for the kids to choose from, now two new hobby hour activities will be offered this summer. For campers ages K-6, the JCC has contracted with D.B.P. Robotics to deliver a dynamic, hands on Lego Robotic Program. Children in this program behave as young scientists as they engage in applying math and science concepts through researching, designing, building and programming autonomous Lego robots. We will invite our older campers, grades 4-8, to explore the world of music technology with a GarageBand Video Hobby Hour. If your child has ever wanted to learn to play an instrument, write music or record a song, GarageBand has everything they need.

Campers will be taught the basics of music production and music video production. A computer lab with six to eight Mac computers will be used for this new and stimulating hobby hour.

In addition to all of the fun and games, each week’s activities will revolve around a theme of the week, with many activities and special events including water slides, shows and different mechanical rides. Characters will be in costumes based on the weekly themes at flagpole and visiting the children throughout camp.

Many new things are just around the corner for campers and the Alper JCC is the place to be this summer! If your child is not already registered or you have friends looking for a fun summer camp experience for their kids, call the camp office today at 305- 271-9000, ext. 270 or 271.
