Giving back to the community

I am a junior at Palmer Trinity School and, in partnership with the South Dade YMCA, I have created a community service project to assist economically challenged students.

Exposed to sports at the YMCA as a youth, I wanted to give children the same opportunity that I had to attend Y camps.

Thus, in partnership with Howard Drive Elementary, the Steinman Scholars Scholarship will be awarded to students who excel in the classroom by showing the highest margin of academic gains and exemplary behavior. The recipients will have to earn the reward by working hard and being a role model for others. It is my hope that the advantage that I am giving thesekids will open a door for them to get involved in a healthy and beneficial environment.

Studies have shown that children involved in sports or other cultural activities stay away from gang activity, perform better in the classroom and become role models. Through these efforts, it is my hope that a positive impact will influence the recipients to make the right choices and study hard.

Steinman Scholars has funding and donations to reward two students with eight weeks of South Dade YMCA camp time during the 2014 summer program.

Please help me triple that enrollment with a tax deductible donation earmarked for these students. Any amount large or small will make a lasting impact on a child’s life.

Donations by check should be made to the South Dade YMCA with Steinman Scholars written on the memo line and dropped off at the Y or mailed to South Dade YMCA of Greater Miami, c/o Peyton Tune, 9355 SW 134 St., Miami, FL 33176.
