Impact your community, join the Greater Miami Chamber

Miami_Chamber_Good_to_Great2-1800x1350I recently had the privilege of attending the annual Goals Conference of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce (GMCC). It was themed

“Make an Impact” and it truly did for the hundreds of GMCC members in attendance, including me.

With so much energy, insight, and community concern packed into one amazing conference, it is abundantly clear the GMCC will continue to make a positive impact on our region, and in the process make South Florida a better place for our children and grandchildren.

From its beginnings, this chamber has imagined a Greater Miami region powered by dynamic entrepreneurs, cutting-edge technologies, an educated work force, and imaginative leaders. All of this was on display at the Goals Conference, one of the chamber’s several signature annual productions.

Billed as GMCC’s “legendary retreat,” the June 16-17 conference at the Downtown Miami Hilton officially opened the community planning for the coming year. It also served to reflect on the success of its committees and leadership in the past year.

But the big news this year was installation of new leadership, including new chair Dr. Mark B. Rosenberg of Florida International University. I congratulate Mark and look forward to his leadership and rollout of innovative strategies that will continue moving the South Florida business community forward.

The conference focused on three areas: Achieving Goals, Critical Issues, and Networking. Topping the list was establishment of 2016-17 goals that GMCC will strive to achieve related to community development, and civic and business leadership. We also discussed critical issues related to the future of our community, and finally, we got to enjoy impactful networking and idea sharing.

Chair-elect Rosenberg unveiled five major areas of opportunity, GMCC’s “key pillars” for 2016-17, and it’s no surprise that transportation is a leading concern. The continued threat of regional economic stagnation due to ever-increasing commute times was addressed in one of several “Impact Panels.” Others focused on entrepreneurship and innovation; regional relations with Cuba; sea level rise, and cybersecurity. It was a powerful event — a powerful organization!

I strongly encourage you to join the GMCC, because it serves as the voice of business in South Florida, representing 400,000 employees of member companies, and is a proactive chamber, regularly engaging in issues that are important to its member companies and individuals. GMCC is primarily funded by membership dues, allowing it an independent presence in the community.

I also want to congratulate the GMCC members honored in the 2016 “Salute to Miami Leaders:” Dwight Hill, Nelly Rubio, Daniel Jacobson, Jeannett Slesnick, Jose Cela, Marlon A. Hill, Dr. Michael Alessandri, and Alexandra Villoch.
