There likely are countless things for you to be thankful for. Can’t think of any? You’re reading this newspaper, which means you’re alive, have your vision and the ability for your brain to absorb information.

Being thankful is the focal point of the nearly 400-year-old tradition of Thanksgiving. After the blessings have been counted, dining rooms are cleaned and we begin feeling like stuffed turkeys ourselves, a less conventional tradition fires off the starting line of holiday shopping: Black Friday. The Alper JCC will be starting at 9 a.m. to roll out our first-ever Black Friday sale. While these specials are currently being kept in the dark, there are very noteworthy discounts that will appeal to many. Check alperjcc.org for updates.

In the spirit of being thankful, firefighters and EMTs put their lives on the line for our community and leave lots to be grateful for, so it only makes sense for our community center to welcome them with open arms. From now through Nov. 30, with a professional ID our local heroes will receive 10 percent off their first year with us and no registration fees. In addition, all former members of the Alper JCC, that have not been members for over a year, qualify for the same promotion as a welcome back gift from us to them.

LINE DANCING
I can confidently ramble on about how mystifyingly huge the Fitness Center is inside, how cutting edge our equipment is, how extremely friendly our staff is and how it feels like a modern day Cheers sitcom at the J, but you just have to see it for yourself. Come by on a Wednesday and get a preview of our newest class: Country Line Dancing, Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. immediately following the TRX class. From grapevining to two-stepping, learn the moves to the most popular country songs while burning up those holiday calories. This may seem like a class one would pay for, but like all other classes at the J, members can take this class as many times as they like for free, while non-members can take it for $5 per class.

Impressions in Watercolor is underway in the J’s Watson Children’s Discovery Museum.

Another class with a more moderate pace is our Abs and Back class, Tuesday mornings at 10:30 a.m., where you will be physically educated on the fundamentals of strengthening and stretching your back and core areas. If you are interested in more than our classes and would like a full “Day at the J” pass where you can also experience the gym, pool, tennis, racquetball and everything else we offer, stop by membership and we’ll be happy to give you a tour of our sprawling campus and a day to enjoy it all. For more information, call 305-271-9000, ext. 227, or go to itzanani@alperjcc.org.

IMPRESSIONS IN WATERCOLOR
Sharing the spotlight with the Fitness Center is our Cultural Arts Center, which is currently hosting many events. Impressions in Watercolor in our Watson Children’s Discovery Museum is going on now through Dec. 10, with the opening reception and awards ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 20, from 6-8 p.m. The annual exhibition preserves and promotes the unique character of watercolor as a medium among our young artists. The Miami Watercolor Society, as well as the Dade Art Educators Association Renay Rossi Awards of Excellence, will hand out $3,000 in gift certificates. How’s that for something to be thankful for? You can check out this event Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. (except holidays), or call for an appointment.
