Mayor Lerner to receive ‘Home Rule Hero Award’

Pinecrest Mayor Cindy Lerner will receive a Home Rule Hero award from the Florida League of Cities.

pt-politics-mayor-cindylerner-featuredMayor Lerner was one of about 70 municipal officials from around the state tapped for the award last month.

“These men and women are some of the Florida League of Cities biggest advocates for municipal issues, always willing and ready to contact legislators and travel to Tallahassee to be sure a local voice is heard on issues that are important to cities,” said director Scott Dudley. “It is clear that these public servants have devoted themselves to Florida’s citizens and will remain loyal to their cities and state far into the future.”

Lerner will receive the award at the Miami-Dade League meeting on Aug. 6. She is being honored for “tireless efforts to advance the League’s legislative agenda and help protect the home rule powers of Florida’s cities” during the 2015 legislative session. All of the Home Rule Hero Award recipients are local government officials who have consistently responded to the League’s request to contact members of the legislature and give a local perspective to an issue.

“We have to protect our ability to be innovative, to problem solve, to establish business opportunities and to maintain quality of life resources in our own cities, towns and villages,” said Mayor Lerner. “I have long been an advocate and will use those skills in communicating our needs at all levels of government to assure that Pinecrest thrives.”

Home Rule enables a city to establish a form of government and enact ordinances, codes, plans and resolutions without prior state approval.
