Kevin Rodriguez is the Westminster Christian school mascot and senior class president. Over the course of his high school career, Rodriguez has earned approximately 700 community service hours, many because of the work he has done as class president.

One of the projects he’s taken the lead on is the annual fashion show that raises money for the Learning Experience. He has ensured that Westminster students fill the needed volunteer roles that help make the show a success.

The time he has put in working with the school on various projects have given him a different perspective on life.

“I’ve learned how to appreciate the life I have and the opportunities I have,” he says. “I appreciate what I have and I’m happy to help those kids.”

Working the fashion show last year gave him the opportunity to watch the student at the Learning Experience as they took part in the show.

“I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face to see the kids to have this moment,” he says. “The spotlight was on them. They felt beautiful or handsome. It put a smile on my face, honestly.”

The Westminster team is on site for two days helping in all aspects of the event.

“Each year we have a group of 20-30 that are required to come both days,” he says. “On Friday we go during school hours. On the Saturday they come early in the morning, and leave in the afternoon.”

His volunteer work includes mission trips to Nicaragua, including a trip started by a fellow student to help a school. It was a great experience for him.

“They were so happy that people were there to see them and help them out,” he says. “Every time we leave, we leave a school of crying children and we are crying as well.”

At Westminster he’s vice president of the National Honor Society and president of Mu Alpha Theta, the math honor society. In tenth grade he saw a need and founded the Spanish Club.

“My brother had gone to another school and he was involved in the Spanish club there. We had a French club but not a Spanish equivalent. I wanted to see a Spanish club.”

Club members help the elementary school with Hispanic Heritage Festival.

His sophomore year, Rodriguez competed at the Miami-Dade County Regional Science Fair in the Behavioral and Social Sciences category. His project was titled: “The Effect of the Area of Visible Sclera on a Person’s Perception of Another Person’s Trustworthiness and Friendliness.”

The project received a Superior Medal and the Dr. Benjamin J. Cole Award for Excellence at the Fair.

His project was one of 30 to go on to the Florida State Science and Engineering Fair. At the Florida SSEF, he received an Honorable Mention Award (4th Place Award) in his category.

From there, he interviewed before a panel of judges to decide if he’d be one of the twelve chosen to go to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles, California. He was selected to be an Intel ISEF Finalist.

Rodriguez is a member of the track and field team. His main event is the 1600 meter. Occasionally he’ll do the 3200 or the 800.

For college, he applied to a number of schools in North Carolina. He’s also applied to the University of Miami, University of Florida, University of Pennsylvania, University of Virginia and Rice University.

He says he’s torn between business administration and mathematics, although he leans more toward business.
